In saying that, once cut in half, a card is 100% unusable. Also if it's expired, the card is no longer valid in a card present situation and in a card not present environment (i.e. online) the new expiry date and CVV are not going to line up, so again it's useless.

...

How then does a company (Dropbox in this case), manage to charge a current card, when all they hold are the details for an expired card?

Real question is, do said cards go into the red bin or the yellow bin?

my method is…

  • cut in half
  • cut down the mag stripe
  • cut thru the chip
  • cut thru the embossing
  • sprinkle it into the red bin…

if a kid wants to play with it, then I scrape off the mag stripe, scratch off the CVC, and damage the chip with a few strong small cuts to with a cutter knife.

(after about a week or two, I then make it dissapear if if see it laying around).

They go in the general waste bin, the colour of which varies by region.

Because in certain situations, online subscriptions that have a card lodged do not require an updated expiry date and the CVV is just to prove the card is in hand when signing up.

See This from SquareSpace or This from Stripe

Ultimately it comes down to subscriptions and whether the issuing bank will allow continued charges if the account is still active and none of the other details have changed...
