I’m amazed commercial retail on shelf brands of coffee haven’t made instant packs like they do with those terrible pre mixed sachets.

holidaying at the moment and a jar is too much and hotel freebies are not nice.

if you are wondering, I need a quick coffee hit when on holiday before venturing out to find better…

When I need to take some coffee out for later, I use one of those glass vanilla essence bottles and pour a double shot into it. Then when I need it later, just add hot water and the shot to a cup. Instant hit of good coffee :)

I went to a cafe once that put milk in my 'long black'.  They took offence when I pointed out it doesn't have milk and asked them to re-make it.  They continued to insist they were making it correctly.  Even when I pointed out the name of the drink included 'black' they still dug their toes in.  They did begrudgingly make one for me without milk. Needless to say never went there again.

My morning coffee is a cafe au lait - either just a cup of hot milk with a couple of spoons of instant coffee, or if not available, a cup of hot milk with drip coffee.

After this if I'm home I tend to drink espresso, or if I'm out and about a flat white.

It's rare to find a place that makes good espresso in Wellington. Most of the espresso around here seem to be too short (I didn't ask for a ristretto), or they pull it too long and gets really bitter.

It's hard to get an Americano wrong but some places try hard...

If you go to Australia and ask for an Americano they will just look blankly at you.

At a roadhouse I outback WA I asked for a long black, they took my money and then said the electric jug and jar of coffee was on a counter on the other side of the room.

Is it just me or when I get an americano it tastes a bit more gritty or raw if that makes sense?  Sometimes I order it just to see what I get.

It is always amusing to read the explanations given by Anglophile contemporaries for European originals (in this case, Italian ones). A caffè americano is not the same as a caffè lungo (you call it Long Black). The americano is an espresso diluted with water AFTER brewing by hand (because American tourists found espresso much too strong), while the caffè lungo is prepared with more water from the outset DURING brewing in the machine. The taste is different.

I couldn't care less about local misinterpretations in ‘modern’ coffee shops and avoid them.

Incidentally, traditional Italians drink their coffee from their ‘espresso maker’ on the stove, which, at approximately 1.9 bar, naturally does not reach the pressure of an espresso machine at 9 bar. There, it is simply called ‘coffee’ or ‘moka.’ For a real espresso, people used to go to an espresso bar, which has largely become unnecessary thanks to today's home machines.

A cafe lungo isn’t the same as a long black. A long black is basically the same as an Americano.

Coffee in most European countries is pretty terrible, with Germany being particularly bad. Specialty coffee emerged from Australia and New Zealand and has significantly improved on most European coffee.

I already said that I don't care about local misinterpretations, right?

‘It's all a matter of taste,’ said the monkey, and bit into the soap.

Then why are you talking about European coffee? It’s not a locally produced product, it’s been taken from its countries of origin and claimed as the only “real” coffee when it’s just another locally interpreted drink.

I can remember when Australia didnt know what a flat white was. Now they claim it as their own.

As far as I can see, you're the only one who's ‘claimed’ anything. Why do you drink Italian espresso? Because it comes from New Zealand?

Whoa. If anything, I'm the Brazilian guy here and Brazil is the #1 supplier of coffee in the world, almost 1.5 more exports than Vietnam.

So I should be the one talking about, going by some of the takes I am reading.

Instead, let's calm down everyone.

I haven't even warmed up yet. The espresso machine wasn't invented in Wellington either. 😉
