Bung: The statistic tha 40% of fires investigated were started by placing the airfryer on the stove top and turning a stove element on is Gold.

Turning on the wrong stove element is a common mistake. Perhaps more so with older appliances where the position indicators have rubbed off.

To state the obvious, an induction cooktop provides some protection against the non-pot thing on the element scenario. Other than that many Induction cooktops likewise have UI issues of their own.

There may be several relatively logical reasons why people make the mistake. It's under the rangehood exhaust, back of the stovetop is out of reach for small kids, it's known to be a 'safe' place.

gzt: NZ 2022 air fryer fire / paywall

https://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/air-fryer-thought-to-be-cause-of-fire-at-greymouth-house/KUUO2AAQBRC6C7AI2KOMWE7LOM/

Do some have a continuous on setting with no timer?

Edit: add no paywall article

Thank you. That was quite scary and shows how easily it can happen.

The problem with these fryers is the naked element is so close to the source of fat that if it splutters enough the fat will ignite and run to the wiring. Some explode.

I will never treat one with such blasé again.

I think the main problem is people not cleaning them. The host admitted that the filthy one he showed was his own. Don't think he had ever cleaned out the bottom payer when all the fat drips. Also putting them on a stove top and accidently turning the hob on also seems to be a common one.
