Eva888:

Our sludge tax arrived today at $260 along with a letter advising that from 1 July they will also be collecting a levy to fund the construction of a sludge Minimisation facility at Moa Point.

You're already paying the levy , it just increases every year until 2027/28....

"Residential, connected with a capital value (CV) of $1 million:
The levy will begin at about $71 in 2024/25 and increase to about $326 per year by 2027/28."

How are people going to afford all these new levies they are hoisting onto ratepayers with already ridiculous high rates to pay. I believe we are also looking forward to new water rates being added mid year as well.

Local government rates are a small fraction of central government rates, but local government is expected to provide much of the critical infrastructure for our towns and cities.

Now central government wants to restrict local government from gathering more revenue. Doesn't make sense, unless you want to live in a country where the basics are neglected.

Makes sense if the govt wants to privatise everything. Imo that would be worse.

Water charges are not part of the proposed rates cap...

Yes, and it is going to be a massive increase in total local government tax for many households. I wonder if if Labour get back in, they will reverse this new 'local water done well' system, back to more what three waters was supposed to be. But incoming governments don't often reverse these sorts of things.

Council also provide a lot of services that central government should be paying for and providing, such as council housing. So those could be the first things that get cut. But council staff do seem to be highly paid with a lot of perks based on the report on my local council. As soon as a you have  CEO of an organization, they require being paid at a certain level, and the new water entity in each area I am guessing will then need an additional new CEO, staff, branding and offices.

Good news the flood of sanitary pads and wet wipes might have been staunched. :-)
""
The waste is now being screened for solid items like wet wipes and sanitary items but is otherwise raw sewage.

Good there was nothing important enough up and down the country for Government to give councils some carrot and stick. :-)
