So long as this results in them stopping printing a worthless to me fuel discount voucher on each shop at new world, I call it a win.

I was the 'Club Card Champion' for my store when NW Club launched - was my first exposure to a MS Surface. Remember going to the initial presentation and being told how this would enable all the tracking goodness, beacon based push notifications for personalised specials, etc etc.

Wonder if owners got the same presentation this time around, or if people's increased awareness/hostility to app tracking has put the brakes on this sort of use case.

The main thing I remember is how large the profit increase number was for Tesco when they rolled theirs out in the UK.

Which is what happens when all supermarkets runs their annual special promotions where we are conned into increasing our expenditure to get points or whatever, towards glassware, cookware, cutlery, kitchen utensils, etc.

I can still hear a radio announcer saying, "I just want my bl%#dy steak knives" after all stocks were given out and said announcer had over-spent to get enough points that were worthless.

The same is true with the loyalty schemes, it's really about getting us in the door to spend (more) money, in the faint hope we might get a special here and there.

I don't have anything to tap when shopping there other than the payment terminal, they just ask if I want a receipt which I do, and hand it to me along with the fuel discount thing which is no use as its not for EV, and its at a fuel station that when discounted is still way more expensive than others.

Presumably their attitude is that Pak'n'Save prices are already heavily discounted (likely funded in part by higher prices for the same items at New World stores) so you are not entitled to any loyalty points.

Let me fix that for you..

We make you think pak'n'save prices are heavily discounted by sticking them is a huge shed with minimal fit out, only stock a few brand choices, and make you walk 3 miles to get round the "power perimeter" that leaves you in the back corner of the store....

According to https://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/foodstuffs-to-launch-club-rewards-programme-across-new-world-paknsave-and-four-square-stores/IHI4NTHRXVEM5NNRTPSQF6ADRM/

Pak’nSave customers won’t earn anything from their purchases but can still use Club+ Dollars earned elsewhere to pay for groceries.

I expect they might start doing this "member only" discount lark at PnS though, which will be a right pain.

I couldn't migrate my existing Club Card account.

I entered the email address and never received the code. I then decided to use a different email address, and the code showed up almost instantly.

It then asked if I had my existing Club Card number, which I copied from the New World page. It also asked for my date of birth. I provided both correctly, and it insisted it couldn't find my account.

Their old system seems to be in a bit of disrepair for these kinds of problems to happen.

Here's the stick buried in the small print, down the stairs past the leopard sign.. in a section you have to click to open

"From 15 June

If you shop online at New World, PAK’nSAVE or Four Square these services are now specially for Club+ members. To continue using these services, you will need to have a Club+ account."

They are heavily promoting online purchasing. I wonder if this is a precursor to dynamic pricing hitting our shores?

Honestly, I think this is pretty scummy. I realise they can do what they want but I think that allowing people the convenience of online shopping only if they sign up as a member is a dirty thing to do. Which is par for course for supermarkets I guess. I suspect also that people who aren't members will find that prices on average at PnS will go up. I don't see PnS giving discounts on already low prices to club members. Club members will instead get what they've always been able to get without having to join a club and non-club members will pay the "non-member surcharge".

A lot of places have a guest checkout option that doesn't "make an account" but generally all that means is you don't have a password on your account so the only way to view things is the link in the email and at some later stage you add a password your stuff is all there ready for you because it was on your account all along.

Its some crap dreamed up by those marketing idiot types. The same ones that wont insist on verification of email addresses because of "friction" which means I have loads of morons signing up for things with my sensible gmail addresses

I'm not talking about creating an account. I'm talking about having to join their club card to be able to use online shopping.

The stupid thing is that if you want a receipt, which everyone should want if they want any chance of returning defective foods(which is not uncommon), then it also prints out a fuel docket. Such a waste of paper because their fuel prices aren't the cheapest if you have a fuel card.

Sometimes PNS prices are higher than those at NW in the same town for exactly the same product. Can easily check this using the grocer app and scanning bar code. Noticed they have put prices up a lot in the last month, sometimes multiple times as well and they almost never have the bread I get on special.
