pslog,

overseas hosting all the way. way more bandwidth and cheaper. youtube, facebook etc are all hosted overseas and they are fast as.

i would recommend a dedicated server from hostgator:

http://www.hostgator.com/dedicated.shtml

Whats good about hostgator is you get a 'managed' server which means they take care of all the operating system updates, software updates etc so you don't have to do it yourself. their cheapest plan gives you 1,500GB bandwidth.

Dedicated servers and VPS for that matter are over rated and far too recourseful for what you need. What you are describing will run quite fine in a shared environment. Have a look at a stite like resellerzoom.com (i use these guys). And another option for you would be Grid servers. (google these). I cant see you need to pay more than $12-15 US a month.

Who are you hosted with currently out of intrest? Are you sure there servers are in NZ?

i have been running quite a few sites from oversease. i normally use www.hostgator.com and they have been quite good.

there are lots of similar companies doing the same thing and to be honest for what you will be wanting of them (forums, blogs etc) any of them should suffice really.

I looked today and hostgator are now offering an unlimited storage and unlimited bandwidth package for about US$8.

As long as you are not streaming lots of data like videos and hi-res photos you will be just fine.

cheers

If you're hosted overseas does that not exclude you from searches for sites in NZ even if you have a .co.nz domain name? That could be something to think about too.

This is totally incorrect. I host dozens of NZ domain names on a server in the states, and all rank very well in .nz specific searches.

I use hostgator for some .co.nz websites and they pop up in google when doing nz site searches. Hostgator has been great for me. Their live chat has been great. They seem very customer oriented from my perspective. I use plain old shared hosting and haven't seen issues with performance.

My views (except when I am looking out their windows) are not those of my employer.

Seaech engines do not base their results on geolocatio nof DNS servers IP addresses, so no tht is not correct. As Tony says and site hosted overseas will go through the same criteria for ranking as local hosts..

I wasn't a hundred percent sure, that's why it was phrased as a question. I was thinking back to something I read. I managed to track it down: http://kevinpye.com/Site/seo/hosting.aspx

Also if you are a New Zealand only business and have a dot com web site hosted in the USA, then your site will not be visible in the Google search engine results pages for Google NZ.   It will only be found in the Google.com (international) index.

Out dated info?

The new activity on this thread has reminded me that I have not reported what I went for. I moved to HostGator "Baby" about a month ago. It costs US$9.95 per month on a month by month basis. I can get the same plan for US$8.95 if I sign up for 24 months or US$7.95 for 36 months. Unlimited bandwidth, storeage, domains, MySQL databases. As someone else observed their on line support chat is just great. Very happy so far. And "Yes" my site still comes up first in a Google search.

overseas hosting will always be better. if new zealand hosting was better i am sure google and facebook would host in new zealand to save bandwidth costs but they dont because hosting in nz costs lots more.

Makes no sense. Hosting in the U.S. is good for Google because it's closer to theirmain audience. Even so they have distributed data centres around the world. Most large companies don't "host overseas", actually using a CDN (Content Distribution Network) such as Akamai to get closer to their "consumers".
