CNN and Sky News Australia are giving this a fair amount of air time (even putting tv1 and 3 to shame)

Fox news was "awaiting casualty reports from the unreachable NZ authorities" ROFL.

From Stuff.co.nz:

"The Deep Cove Hostel manager and his wife, who are based at Doubtful Sound, said the quake was so severe they hid under a table.

The manager reported loud bangs in the area which might indicate slips and he heard water "swooshing loudly" in the sound."

Thats a LOT of water to be swooshing around...

freitasm: And soon after a very small one here in Wellington...

The Geonet (www.geonet.org.nz) is not responding well - timeout, no access. Perhaps overloaded?

Geonet doesn't list anything for Wellington area. I felt it up here in Paraparaumu!
I reckon it was part of the South Island quake
Map shows that Wellington region WOULD have felt that quake

felt the one at 9:40pm in Palmerston North. Was reading a book and felt my bed shake a little, nothing major, probably about the same as when a train goes past (am about 100m from train tracks as the crow flies)
