You should be asking that the send you a picture of cheque by email so that you can clarify with your bank that they would accept the cheque. The photo should include them in it, and perhaps even the front page of their current and local Newspaper, for the sake of authenticity. Explain that otherwise it would be necessary for them to make the payment by Transfer.....
ok so now they should be hooked.

But of course your bank will require their bank details and a similar amount of Personal information about them.

Perhaps even, you are travelling to South Africa for some football matches soon (world cup) and can stop over in Nigeria and pick up the cheque personally, or would be willing to pay the airfare to get them to deliver it to you personally in Bloemfontein.. again you would need personal details from them for this.

They usually send you a cheque that will bounce, the whole idea is that when you see the cheque you transfer 5k from the balance to their account...

That's funny, on mine it's advertising SOFTware.

Good one... Actually it's probably a more common problem than you think. And it's a valid advertiser (well, it's not an online pharmacy delivering from Thailand)...

manta: I've written to him asking how I get my bank draft. Watch this space!

One stage nearer to the money; here's the latest from Jim of the UN.  Sadly no blessings for the family this time :(

I've asked him to find the most cost-efficient method of getting the cheque to me. Perhaps I should fly to Lagos?  What do you think?

Dear Gerald

I received the information that you sent. your cheque is prepared and
ready to be sent out, but i want to inform you what you need to know
the three ways in which you can receive this your payment.

Our agreement with the United Nations is to pay over 220 people and
what they wanted was for this whole 220 people to come down here to
Nigeria and receive their payments themselves, then my bank thought of
a better and faster solution which is to send your cheque through
courier service or have it deposited into the beneficiary's bank
account, only if the beneficiary's are ready to take care of the little
fees.

Have in mind that it is not the intension of the United Nation for you
to pay fees, my bank just thought it would be easier to send your
payment off instead of you flying all the way to Lagos - Nigeria to
receive your payment, but if that is what you want fine, if not we will
go to diffrent courier service offices and contact with the Bank's
Transfer Units dept to know what each of them will cost
you.

So let me know what you want.

Email me or call me +234 702 619 5146

Mr. Jim Ovia

Maybe you could drum up some more business for them and say you have a whole crowd of folks from Geekzone who have all been scammed in the past, and would like cheques, and are thinking of chartering a plane to come to Nigeria to collect. (then post a picture of a Air NZ plane)

Ask about airports, landing fees, whether passports are needed, hotel accomodation etc.

common sense is not very common

do it, fly over! just remember to bring security guards for your safety :P

ascroft, I wouldn't post a pick of a nz plane as we wouldn't want them laughing at a paper dart as that might clue them in to the fact we are the poorer country and we're actually trying to scam them instead
