markh14: so how will it work?
you hop onto the plane and what appears on your screen? instead of vodafone or telecom will it say 'air new zealand'?
if there is no notification alot of people may get caught out by the high data costs.
do you just text phone numbers normally like 021 or do you need the country code?

From what I have read airlines usually contract out to a mobile provider to provide the service on the plane so it probably won't be airnz that comes up on the phone.
They will probably have the details of how to use it and how much it costs in the magazine or provide it on another form specific to the feature.
Most airlines also usually only let feature like this be used in business or first class.

Emirates have a service where you can send texts from your entertainment system where your swipe your credit card to send the message and when it is replyed to a message will come up on your console saying that you have a message waiting and if you have moved seats for some reason you can also check for messages at other consoles by using your credit card to identify yourself.
This feature cost $1USD a text so was not cheap.

The thing that would annoy me on the plane would be teenagers texting hard core that don't realise how much it costs and they will rack a big bill up for mum and dad without thinking about it.
In that situation it is mum and dads fault if they don't inform the teen on how much these things cost or even investigate the cost themselves.

Texting costs are just your standard roaming costs so no different from texting when overseas anyway. If parents were concerned about their kids texting overseas then they wouldn't let them take their phones!

I could of said that better, if they did not put their phones onto silence would be the part that would bother me, the only things that bother me about the bills is when said parents go to the newspaper stating "no one told me that it would cost this much etc" and blame it on the telco.

Yeah I would imagine that the in-flight crew will be pretty strict about the silent mode requirement. I know that if I were to hear a constant stream of text message notifications I'd be letting the recipient know exactly how I felt about it :)

if data is allowed couldn't people make calls using skype voip? couldn't people record an audio and send it as a voice message? how is air new zealand going to ban voice calls?

if noise is really the reason they are not allowing voice calls they should just provide ear plugs for passengers. they already provide bags, oxygen masks, so why not ear plugs?

+1 for freedom to choose to make voice calls.

No one really wants to listen to you jabber on a flight!  People inevitably talk louder into a phone (including me).  I for sure am not interested in sitting next to someone shouting into their phone.

Forget the earplugs, ban voice calls instead.  Oh wait, they already did.

So we can now add another annoyance to flying: beep beep text messages, together with crying babies and strangers falling asleep on your shoulder :P

Don't forget the obese passenger next to you who is actually taking up your seat as well...

Could you not just make a SIP call though?

With the latency and roaming data prices, would you want to?
