Used MBASIC with some assembly in the middle for some routines. I did a semester of FORTRAN at university, plus those things like COBOL, LISP, JCL, Assembler, etc...

As for being older - well today (the day of this post) I am yet another year older...

I really should have gotten into something a little more substantial than BASIC. I just didn't want to splash out on C. What can I say? I'm cheap.

I also wrote a very basic word processsor in gwbasic just for kicks. Could write (but not delete lines!), save, open and print. Was very limited.

I used to read a lot of manuals back in the day and saw instructions on how to do it and thought 'that would be neat to do'.

I wrote a database system on the C64 that could handle thousands of records, with user definable fields with random access from multiple floppy drives. I was about 10 at the time i think.

It took months to write, as I was pretty much learning as I went along, and I didnt have any BBS access, just outdated library books. When I asked the library for newer books about computer programming to be added, they just looked at me like I was a leper (Now where would libraries be without software writers HUH?)

I would have been at a similar age as well.

I remember the PC20 was a hand down from my grandfather who'd recently been convinced by his sons that he needed a new computer and he got a 166mhz box with 32mb ram.... it was really nice playing Quake on (it came with the modem!).

The first useful program I wrote was a budgeting calculator. It was dull.

My favorite programs involved putting two computers next to each other and using the "PLAY" command to do songs in harmony. Every Christmas, I'd have PCs all over the place playing "Angels We Have Heard on High."

They should have let me out more often.
