joker97: i've got something better than all the above! (well in my opinion!)

get something with a vibrating floor head - need extra power for the large head so dont be fooled by other spinning heads with no extra power.

I got a weirtheim one with the vibrating head and it shakes the carpet and brings the dust up to be sucked. from my encrusted sand test it suck way way more and faster than all the other models that do not have the vibrating head.

Other manufacturers do them too. I have one. Hoover and electrolux also have the same type of powerhead that vibrates the carpet. Look in consumer for the most reliable brands, as the one you have got ranks at the bottom. They do however take a lot of fluff off the carpet too, so do casue a bit of wear.

Starplay: Miele is most certainly the best way to go! - Doesnt have to be a pet one - Any of them are really good. We have to turn the suction down on ours. It always does a really good job.

The powerful suction mode, is the for the turbo head, and you really need the turbo head to get deaper down into the carpet to remove the hair. It all depends on the head you have on it, many people use the hard floor head on carpet, so find it really hard to push on the most powerful settings. ALso you are better to go for the higher models of miele, as the cheapest models may not be made in germany like the higher up models. The cat and dog was on special recent at harvey normans for about $550ish and is good value. The only downside are the bags that are expensive, but you can get them cheaper on trademe.

Bagless vacuums have the disadvantage that they have to be emptied regually, and it is not as clean as using a contained bag, as the dust can go everywhere.

Forget the Dyson.

Consumer did a great review a few months back.

We bought a new one about 2 months ago. I can't remember whch one :( I'll post again when I get home in an hour or so :)

I think they are fine, as long as you don't expect it to last that long. However I expect my vacuum to last at least 10 years, and miele rank well for long life.

We have a Miele (with a bag) and a Dyson. The Dyson absolutely outperforms the miele every time. As a test we've vacuumed with the Miele and then gone over the same room again with the Dyson; it is frightening how much more the Dyson then picks up. The Miele now lives in the cupboard.

Make sure that whatever you get it has a rotating brush bar it is this that gets the dirt out of the carpets and in the way of the sucky thing.

I'm going to go against the crowd here and tell you to just get the chepaest bag vac you can find, then buy the clip on 'bagless' accessory they sell at Godfrey's (which i think is around $20).

(it;s like a tube that fits onto the tube of the vac and collects the dust and crud in a special container.)

works a treat, and we have a dog that sheds it's hair a hell of a lot.

dysons are good, but for the price I think they are a waste of money

I have a Husqvarna, 2000w with powered (turbo) head...twin speed, bagged and very, very good - the best bit - it's about 15 years old.

Still going strong.

Totally depends on the model of miele you are comparing it with. There are models that have a rotating brush (the cat and dog), as well as a higher model with a seperately powered powerhead.

The thing about these deep cleaning models, is do you really need to get that really deep down dirt out, and is it actually getting rid of ALL of the deepdown dirt anyway.

I would hope so too, based on the price of them. Some people don't use their vacuum cleaner too much , which can their prolong the life a lot.

Dear all,

Thanks for all of the feedback.
From the forum,consumer NZ and various website feedback and a visit to Godfreys I have found the following. ( Godfreys do not stock Dyson )

+ Dyson is either great or zero, depending on user and subjective.
+ The new vacuums with powered spinning heads are definitely better. Some you can and can't touch while in operation.Obviously the heads you can't touch are better.
+ It's not about the wattage, but the head design.
+ Miele are far more dependable and generally have great suction.
+ Hoover have poor dependablitiy.
+ Bagged or Bagless cost similar.Bagless need HEPA filters. Some filters are washable-economy plus.
+ We are going to purchase a steam hard floor cleaner also. No mops !
+ The consumer NZ review is becoming dated.

We will probably purchase Hoover Core Plus. Demo vs others was awesome.
