Ben: Apart from that, feel free to bag me personally at your pleasure. Rather me than others with less advantage and ability to fight back.

Probably not a good idea, personal attacks are against the FUGs, and you'll get a warning from me or one of the other mods.

Argue the point, let's not attack Ben please Smile

It was different when Henry came out with the odd pearl every now and then - not everyone's cup of tea but it was witty nonetheless....

Now that it's his trademark and the level of expectation is there it's almost like he goes out of his way to be as blatant as possible. So it's gotten beyond a joke now.

I support Ben, if for no other reason than you can't force comedic timing.

I like some of the comments that Paul makes on occasion, the ones that nowadays is wrong because of the "pc" brigade, but todays was purely a racist comment, nothing else.

Good work Ben!

As others have said, PH just says what everyone else is thinking but too scared to say it. Some people like it, some dont.

I think people need to get over Pauls comments. It's entertaining Tv and I can see why tv3 couldn't compete and cancelled sunrise. We need a break from the 'pc' world and he gives that.

M_I_C_H_A_E_L: Was just going to make a thread about this, I know Ben is a member of Geekzone also.

Personally I dont see what the big deal is, Paul Henry seems to be a very intelligent man.

I agree with his comments, Anand Satyanand doesnt "look" like a new zealander to me. However in saying that, The changing face of NZ is infact multi cultural - Lots of people from all over the world coming here.

To me a "New Zealander", is somebody who is either white, maori or from the islands. Now im not saying I dont want people from other countries living here, just that somebody who is going to represent us on the world wide stage has to "look like a New Zealander"

Good on you Paul Henry.

Im prepared to get flamed :p

To me a "New Zealander" is someone who is maori. Everyone else is an immigrant.

The only difference between my line above and yours is that I took the white and islands people out while you choose not to. So white or islands people who were also imigrants back in the days and their current generations can now be classified as kiwis but the governor general who is of indian descent but born and bred just like you right here in NZ is not a kiwi because he is an indian in the end. nice theory there..

ps - good work ben. totally support your actions.

Do whatever you want to do man.

Maoris are immigrants too and like the rest of us they were not the first people to arrive in NZ either.

Oh good lord, this conversation couldn't continue long without someone bringing out that old turd could it?

Seriously though, the fact that other bigots think the same thing doesn't make it OK for PH to say it, anymore than holocaust deniers are given leeway because some people happen to also think it. Bigots should be afraid to say things like that, to do otherwise is to show themselves as bigots who also lack a proper sense of decorum, or in PHs case the requisite IQ to know when to keep his mouth shut.

What do you mean "that old turd"?  It's a valid answer to the "everyone else is an immigrant line".

I can't believe Paul Henry said what he did either.  Perhaps even he can't believe he said it as he has apologised rather quickly.

Most of the show seems to involve him putting his foot in his mouth and this would be no exception.

For those who 'can't believe what Paul Henry said', I can only say...
He's on TV for a reason, people watch him and take notice of what he says.
Right or wrong.
He goes out every morning, puts himself out there, and like many live entertainers, he steps over the mark. It has happened in the past, it'll happen again.
Paul Holmes does the same thing, Mike Yardley, Mike Hoskings, Marcus Lush, Kim Hill, Sean Plunkett, John Campbell etc...
It's the nature of the beast.
I believe that when you tune in, you should, by now, understand exactly what you're going to hear and see.

If TV was hosted solely by smiling, never offend, friendly soles - then it'd offer a lot less variety and entertainment.

For the record, I don't like what the guy said, but I see it as a necessary evil for those wanting to consume live media. AND I totally back Ben for not wanting to be associated with the show. While I'm not sure I'd personally quit over that comment alone, I'm picking it was the straw that broke the camels back.
However... it will serve to give Mr Henry more publicity, meaning more buzz, more water cooler talk and probably (without a TV competitor to go head to head with anymore) more ratings.
My $0.10.

I meant "that old turd" because it simply isn't true, its hard to believe that people still want to believe that, despite it being so widely discredited. Its not a valid response to the immigrant line.

I'm not really sure why people are saying they can't believe he said that, I mean its not as if we don't know the calibre of the man by now, seems perfectly plausible that PH would say that... What is hard to believe is that PHs brain can stop his mouth running enough to prevent him saying stuff like that everyday...

Here's the clip if you haven't seen it

I don't ever watch the program so don't know what he's normally like, but it seems to me he was trolling in the vein of a radio shock jock.  And thats never a good sign, whichever way you cut it.

I don't think it's something I'd personally quit over, but certainly respect that fact that Ben has taken a stand.  It's good to see people acting on their convictions.

are you saying that Maori people have been in Nz for ever and ever since the landmass known now as New Zealand existed?
