Well, my first thought was to recommend "Number 5" up on City Rd. Absolutely top class, incredible service, and within walking distance. (though uphill, so perhaps tough in heels)

However, having read your qualification... it may not be quite what you're after.

DaVinci's (underneath Number 5) is another big favourite of ours when we're looking for something a little less formal.

Monsoon Poon @ Downtown carpark, been to the Wellington one, great service very relaxed dining experience, not pretentious & really good food

My colleague suggested Tanuki Cave for Japanese Yakitori... sounded good, we couldn't find it but then we didn't walk far up enough on Queen's Street.

Tony's was great, nice decent serving of meat!

Sal's NY Pizzas apparently is very good - haven't tried it myself but I love pizzas, so it'll be our mission next time when we get to Auckland.

Internet is my backyard...

The Grove is one of my favourites - a bit more dressed up but not as "posh" as Dine by PG et al...

Soul on the waterfront does a very relaxed approach - great for lunch, bit rowdier at dinner but definitely not in the pretentious bracket.

My favourite restaurant at the moment is no good to you, sorry. Merediths, on Dominion Road, is too far away and probably will set off the alarm bells as well. My wife declared it to be OTT but I love it. Great service, great food.

If it's good quality food with a bit of noise and excitement then try Vivace on High Street. Lots of good pasta, lots of noise but probably not as good for an anniversary.

I'll think on.

It's also very expensive. One of the most expensive meals I've eaten in Auckland (similar in price to St Tropez, a french restaurant in Parnell)

I think that Da Vincis might meet your requirements - I've always found their steaks excellent and service/atmosphere great.

Thanks once again for all the excellent suggestions. At this stage we are leaning towards Tony's, as my wife also heard great things about it from a workmate. But I'll be locking away all the suggestions here for the next time we can secure a babysitter.

In my search I also found a restaurant called Wine Cellar (Shortland St) that looked to be a great compromise between the fine dining experience I sought and the more casual nature my wife desired. Has anyone eaten there before?

My wife and I also dined there recently - It was also very, very good. (Incidentally, we found many menu items were shamelessy pilfered from their flagship establishment)

Still very "upmarket" compared to a Steakhouse, but missing the "formality" of No.5
(and as per the comment above, still reasonably expensive)

Highly recommended though. :)
