@wmoore Thanks for the information, my girlfriend is unaware of all these laws. It should really be a prerequisite for graphic design.

@Balchy lol

@LennonNZ no, it never occurred to me to ask why they stole it. I just assumed they liked it so much they wanted to sell it too. It was the only design on sale in their shop if I recall. We just told them that they had to take it down and stop selling/using the design.

I thought it was? Certainly was a big part of product design, and I think its in the foundation year for the other design cources too.

This reminds me a bit of a fairgo story a few years ago. However this case is probably worse. In that case a well known clothing company took a photo of a public artwork, and sold that as a print on t shirts. The artist then tried to get this company to pay for the print, as they believed they owned the copyright of it. However the work was comissioned by the council, so I would have assumed all the ownship would be transferred to the council or public. Copyright has many grey areas.

There is no grey area with this IP theft.

Complain to their ISP, since thats all it takes to get their internet cut off ;)

Are we talking about the shop, or the initial design?

Not at her uni, media design school. She only did one year of study so that may be it

Thanks for putting this thread/post up actually. It's made me think a bit more about what happens to my photos etc when I hand them over for printing. I guess the best you can do really is try to use a reputable company to handle your printing requirements.
