I bought mine about (can it really be??) 10 years ago. This is when they were 300 odd dollars. I bought a plate for my [then] girlfriend (now wife), and I think there was a promo, it was a good deal to get two. I can't believe how expensive they are now! ($839!!!)

It's the sound Clarus the dogcow makes.

Cheers,
Joseph.

I have BFC450, 59ZTP and 52ZJS.

Yeah, $839 for a bit of stamped metal on your vehicle that probably costs like $10 to make if that... I think not.

I expect like me, they have no idea what it is supposed to say.

As a stranger in your fair land I am mildly puzzled over your registration plates/ number plates.

Most seem to be three letters and three numbers.

Some (like mine) are two letters and four numbers.

Is there any way anyone can tell the age and/or origin of the vehicle from the number plate?

There also seem to be a few which follow the US pattern where you can have any message you want as long as you (presumably) pay.

In the UK we are restricted to already issued number/letter ranges so have to be fairly immaginative to construct a message and some obvious ones are not allowed.

My initials are DWER but I can't buy DWE nnn R because that number range was never issued.

Just wondering what the rules are over here.

Cheers

3 letters came in late 2001.

Link above gives the years the letters were issued.  However, getting a new plate (with the latest letter/number combo) is as simple as taking the old one in and paying your $10 for a new set (I think that's about the price).

Personalised plates are sold by http://www.plates.co.nz/ - you are still limited to 6 characters.  They are quite expensive.

I'm fairly sure it used to be the case that you could reserve a standard issue plate (ie one that is about to come up in the standard numerical series), I don't know if that's still the case though.

Old system was 2 letter then 4 numbers starting from AA then finishing at ZZ9999 around the year 2000 mark I guess.
Then we moved to 3 letters and 3 numbers. AAA and will at some point will finish at ZZZ999. Then we will need to come up with another number system.

We also have personalised plates where you can buy any combination of 6 letters or number syou wish for the crazy price now of $839.

So baically are number plates (for anything other than motor bikes and trailers is) 6 numbers and/or letters

You can buy DWER http://www.plates.co.nz/search/?legend=DWER or for example you may want http://www.plates.co.nz/search/?legend=DWER90 where the last 2 numbers are the year you were born.

You can't have DWE nnn R because it is 7 chars long.

Thanks for the info.

I don't plan to buy a personalised plate for use over the next 4 months :-)

I wouldn't mind a plate in the UK but as I explained I can't get the one I want.

Looks like my 1999 Camry is near the end of the AAnnnn range.
At least it matches the table for the registration year.
The letters are YG.

Cheers

RedJungle: I've got ERR4O4 with a caption 'Plate not found.'

If you lock your keys in the car, your plate should change to ERR403.
