Ubuntu is a well respected fork of Debian, and I doubt there would be any UCE worries... (or even be forced to be on the mailing list).

ASlthough I would recommend anyone dipping into linux to join a couple mailing lists related to their distro... just like joining a car club really...

Car Club implies looking under the bonnet and tinkering with things, but I guess, that is the way of Linux :-)
