All three networks say that mobile networks are up - at the moment

Along with the police, they're urging people to not call, and use SMS if you must contact someone.

www.nzherald.co.nz isn't working, must be overloaded. Video clip on tv3 website already had 80,000 views.

edit: nzherald working now, was down for about 15 to 20 mins.

Interestingly they now say phones are up after an hour shortage.

On the news, the people being pulled out from the rubble look like they belong in the movie SAW. Not nice.

Vodafone has asked on Twitter that people use SMS for quick messages, and leave voice calls for essential services and emergencies only.

Also Telecom New Zealand has released this short statement

Telecom is working intensively to understand which services have been affected by today?s earthquake and get these restored as soon as possible.

Our thoughts are with the people of Canterbury.

We will provide regular updates as more information becomes available.

I can confirm that - I'm in Rolleston. Receiving calls/txt intermittent, landlines calls sometimes go through. Trying to call/txt anyone in Chch CBD just doesn't go through half the time.

TV3 reported that this goes for the entire country, not just in Chcch region - can this be confirmed?
