jbard: Yeah i use 6427XXXXXX

maybe i needed to do +6427XXXXX

surely the + doesn't make a difference though?

Have requested a resend about 30 mins ago - but still nothing.

No need for the +

Weird you never got it. I am with Vodafone, received it in a few seconds

It must be because my number is ported - and 2degrees have some problems with international carries i think.

BraaiGuy: Just use these guys, www.fishtext.com

You can buy a virtual NZ number and send SMS's from there from any web browser. You can also receive sms's on that number. The rates are far cheaper than anything you going to get locally.

Hmm just tried to sign up and they said they sent my PIN by text but it hasn't arrived and it's been 20 mins now.

Maybe it is something to do with them telling me i was on Telecom but my number is actually ported to 2degrees?

Will give it a little while longer before requesting them to resend it.

All SMS in NZ is delayed due to the Chch earthquake. Give it some time, or try again. It should come right in a few days.

I've recently signed up to www.clickatell.com so that we can send texts from our service/job manager software to customers and it works really well.
They have a free program for sending & receiving texts too, all you need to do is buy credits to be able to send/receive texts.
Costs about 6.5 cents to send a text and about 2.7 cents to receive depending on how many credits you purchase.
The only downside is that it doesn't look like they can receive incoming texts from 2degrees.

Opinions are my own and not the views of my employer.

GR8, let us know how u find it. Fishtext is really cheap. I buy myself a 5pound topup every few months. And thats enough to send hundreds of sms's all over the world.

If you are using Outlook 2010 it has native support for SMS gateways now. You can find a list of providers here. http://messaging.office.microsoft.com/HostingProviders.aspx?src=O14&lc=1033

If you are using both Outlook 2010 and Exchange 2010 Server, Windows Mobile 6.5 will allow you to send TXT's from Outlook or OWA (Exchanges Web Interface). It synchronises them with the phone via Activesync. I use this all the time.

The 3G mobile internet dongle from Vodafone comes with a built in text message program.
As far as I know the charges are the same as PAYG texts from a phone.

However, it looks as though you already have a solution.

How do you get passed the step when replying to TXT Messages that get Synched to your InBox where it asks you to up an SMS Account within Outlook?

We have Outlook 2010 clients with Exchange 2010 and ActiveSynch appears to be working OK (TXT's display in Outlook and OWA inbox)

Probably shoudl update with what I ended up doing - just in case anyone else wants to know one day.

Ended up buying a cheap vodafone/alcatel phone and 2 degrees sim.
Had to buy a micro USB cable to connect it up to a PC - somewhat annoying that they give you a whole bunch of different faceplates etc - but you have to buy the cable... anyway...

Phone has some software that lets you send/receive texts etc from the PC via the phone, but then found Microsoft Outlook SMS Addin (MOSA), that lets you send from Outlook. Either set up contacts as usual and use them or just key in the mobile numbers separated by semi-colons. Only thing that this doesnt give you that the Alcatel/Vodafone software does is the ability to receive the replies onto the PC - but that is ok.

I ran out of texts this month, and thanks to this thread found out about fishtext. 4c per text is way better than the stupid 20c that the carriers charge ad hoc. SMS will be replaced with data one day... the trick will be getting everyone to use the same app/method.

Cancel that :)

Im not sure if ti was due to me having an Exchange Partnership as well as one to my Laptop, but once I deleted the Laptop partnership and just left the Exchange one ... I got the "welcome" message from Exchange and then it all started working.  Too cool.

Good on you. Glad to help you out. Enjoy fishtext. I have been using it for a few years now, only every few months do I purchase a 5pound top up.
