What on earth did they expect? Of course people that don't have the option to up and move on a whim will be a bit anti. How would you feel if you were stuck and suffering, as many are in Chch, and your "mates" simply moved away and left you to it?
I can understand why they'd move (I live in Chch), but I can also understand why their "mates" might feel as if they're being abandoned.
Emotions are still running pretty high down here, and the media reporting this sort of nonsense really isn't helping. I could understand it being newsworthy if they'd been physically assulted or their house torched or something (although one assumes it's not their house), but this obviously hasn't escalated beyond a bit of cold shoulder or it would have been reported.
At least they've freed up a house and jobs for others that need them.

So tell me where in NZ is not a known earthquake risk. Only a small percentage of buildings fell down here. I can't see how it is not a safe decision to continue living here.
this is so true. if you worried about earthquake risk, NZ is not the place for you. what will you say to those who stay put in Wellington?
I would say check the earthquake risk of buildings you use, bridges you cross etc. Wellington must be better prepared now with lots of buildings strengthened but there will still be some that collapse because their owners hadn't done the work.
But giving up and moving away just changes the types of risk. Some people might be ok with that.
What embarrassed me is reading some Christchurchians taking out their frustrations after the quake on their partners/kids all that stress built up where they took it out on the very ones they love. That's embarrassing. But I suppose in the situation they were in losing their homes/homeless everything gone is understandable but goes to show even in a country like New Zealand where we aren't living in 3rd world conditions under to much pressure and any man will break.
