I purchased a phone adaptor from TradeMe only to find I was sold an adaptor far too high voltage for my phone - lucky my phone didn't explode or catch fire, to be honest.

casewindow: However am I right in assuming that the device will only draw the current required so at 7.5v 900mA max (the dse ones) the device will be catered for (drawing only it's required 500mA)?

That's exactly right.

You need to make sure the voltage and polarity is the same; the current rating is the maximum the power supply is capable of delivering, so as long as the new one is the same or greater than the old, you will be fine.

So long as its a regulated one, the unregulated will push out well over their rated voltage, as they use a crap transformer design to achieve the required short circuit protection. Switchmode supplies are not that stupid so are all well regulated, even the I cant believe it only cost a dollar type off ebay.

Cheers for that - one of the ones from RunningMan's second post in this thread (the DSE one) says it is regulated so I'll get that one:

http://dicksmith.co.nz/product/M9927/international-adaptor-3-12v.jsp

(The reason I didn't find it this morning when searching DSE, before making this thread, was that I searched Jaycar and DSE for 'DC Adaptor' and didn't find precisely a 7.5v 500ma one - in fact on DSE 'DC Adaptor' finds virtually nothing. I preferred it when they had auto-complete style results on their search)

I find the easiest way to use DSE's search is to find something that is near enough, then just browse through the catagory that it's in, otherwise you muck around for hours looking for the right keywords!

This is what I used to do with DSE. The problem is that the new site (which I think is worse) has this sequence:

1. Search for product

2. Click product result that is close to what you're after

3. Product category is something like this:
Home > Search Result:"DC adaptor" > Dick Smith Regulated AC Adaptor 4.5V - 12V DC 2.5A

4. (It was only later I realised that by clicking to 'zoom' on the picture it both took me to the correct product category and zoomed at the same time)

Well thats better than the jaycar one where you can search for something, get totally unrelated results and no way to see what catagory each item is in ;)

Although Jaycar have revised their site in the last week or so to make browsing through the catagories far more intuitive.

I'm interested in the responses to this thread.  I need to get a new mains adaptor for a HP DV6 laptop, which now has a connection and only works when twisted a certain way and these are going for $30 on trade me.  The latpops been nothing but trouble for two years and I'd rather put the cash to a new one. Cheapest on Jaycar seem to be $80..
