freitasm: Why wouldn't a photographer give the photos on CD? Afraid customers might get a print somewhere else, taking away some of the revenue?

Partly that, though if the customer pays a proper fee (ie not $150, more like $2000+) that old low up front, expensive prints model isn't really valid.

Mostly, at least for me, it's about the time it takes to get every image ready to print. Think days, not hours. Peoples time is expensive.

I don't mind if the photographer keeps the originals on reflection, but I would like to think we would get a copy of them in a reasonable quality format that allows for reprints of a reasonable size. Last time we used a firm in Newmarket, they gave us copies of the pictures we purchased and they were thumbnail size, which in my opinion isn't good enough.

heavenlywild: I can recommend www.drawphotography.com based in Auckland. Check out the photos, they speak for themselves. They do all kinds of photography.

Wow the photo's on this site are pretty amazing. Hopefully they are in our pricerange.

Portrait photographer rarely give any files at all, so you're probably lucky to get those.

Vote with your wallet though - pay the person or company who will give you what you want, for the price you want to pay. Hopefully you can get it with reasonable quality images. The market will change to meet what the customer wants.

Anyone know of any NZ places that you can send photo's to and they will send you them on really good quality block?

You generally get what you pay for with photography in my experience.

I am pretty happy with the samples they have provided and the stuff on the site, and I can tell you, that as far as I can tell, there is little or no difference between the $1200 quoted by one of the people here, and the $3000 quoted for less by the firm originally offering us their stuff.

Yep, best thing to do is shop around. Photography is unregulated, so on one end you have people charging next to nothing for a great service/product, and on the other you get a photographer charging two, three, and even four thousand dollars for a service/product that can be done the same, if not better, by someone else. Of course, you get the flip side too.

Price should only be an indication, a photographer's work should always speak louder.
