Pish. Inserting yourself into the internet as a middle man, clipping the ticket and not doing anything of value is to be rubbished for the poor excuse for a business that it is. ;-)

see also, VARs that don't AV, music producers and television networks that refuse to screen shows they've already bought.

jaymz: I'm just miffed that I didn't think or do this earlier! Would have been a nice side income! Money mouth

Do it.  You can easily undercut his postage price. Money mouth

scuwp: Gosh, leave the poor industrious fella alone, he's just trying to make a living. Talk about tall poppy syndrome! It's not like he is doing anything really serious like downloading pirated movies or something (LOL)

+1

...and the suggestion that downloading them is free is just stupid!

I'm currently looking at all the 'free downloads' on my connection that are pushing me past 60Gb a month.

40 to 60 gb cost me $30.

...then I have to ask what about the folk who can't get a decent net connection?

...then there's the fact he's raising awareness of this software...

I could go on.

As explained, it's not illegal to "sell" copies of Linux, their licence provides for it.

However I am pretty sure the Microsoft software is not supposed and not licenced to be redistributed like that.

keewee01: ...then he is using Microsoft's name and logo's illegally.

I don't think it is illegal because it is a genuine Microsoft product. He has just format shifted it.

Morally it is questionable, but not illegal.

Hardly. Plenty of people don't have internet fast enough or have big enough plans or prefer a optical media if they have multiple computers etc etc.

I've got my Linux CDs from this guy before:
http://www.copyleft.co.nz/

Made sense back in the days when I had dial up and might still make sense for someone on a slow connection or strict/expensive download limits (mobile broadband?).

While I agree  you're quite right, there comes a point where even Microsoft aren't totally stupid.

If the guys was claiming 'this is the only way to get service pack x...' then yes, I'd agree, that's not on.

But all this guys doing is providing a service and frankly the $10 cost is a great education tool that providers like Microsoft should be right behind.

A lot of business's are like that. Even supermarkets that buy in fruit and veges, they are not adding value, they are just a form of distribution but addon big margins.

The thing is that there is a market for it, and not everyone knows how to download and create a CD, so for those people paying $10 is probably a good investment.

Absolutely wrong there. It is about security. Who knows if this SP is not infected or doesn't contain a Trojan?

You wouldn't download from an unknown web site, why would you install from an unknow, untrusted source?

If things turn to custard, people very quickly will forgot the untrusted source, but sure will blame Microsoft.

Providers like Microsoft are already right behind it.   They've offered service pack CDs for postage since always.

That is provided by Microsoft on a disc they have created.

The issue freitasm refers to is people downloading the service pack from the MS website, injecting a trojan or otherwise into the file/disc image and then burning it to a disc to be "sold" to someone else.

I was replying to Don Gould's suggestion that the $10 fee is an education tool that first parties should get behind, by pointing out that they already are.
