I'm not surprised the instructions with poor quality equipment is wrong. Read up on www.batteryuniversity.com for far more information than you ever wanted to know about batteries.

Have a read of this thread on a photography forum I use. Standard NiMH cells do self discharge, though it should take a few months, not a few weeks. It could be that using crappy chargers has damaged the cells.

Eneloop cells are much better, they don't really self discharge. Even with the lower capacity i'm buying them instead of higher capacity cells that self discharge.

If you want to send me your cells I can run them through the C9000 and see if they recover. PM me for my address.

Im sticking with panasonic from now on for rechargables, the energizer and GP ones are all the ones that are shot, even unknown ebay ones are outperforming them

That's bad! Shows the sort of cr@p we're getting pushed onto us in the local market! Must start replacing my Energizer ones with Panasonic ones.

You can buy decent batteries and chargers in NZ, you just have to do a little research rather than buying whatever DSE have on sale.

Most of my gear came from the US though, it can be a lot cheaper. I have around 100 AA cells and two Maha chargers.

AlliedFusion is mentioned in this thread. We have been rebranded to Recharged.co.nz. You can still buy quality 9v chargers and 9v batteries at Recharged.co.nz :)

The 9V IMEDION battery would be ok in a smoke detector but there are other choices to consider for this application i.e. 9V Lithium or 9V Li-ion.

There are other factors to weigh up when making a decision and these include existing charging equipment, price, toxicity of battery chemical substrate, temperature, recycling etc.

I've got all the smoke alarms in our house hard wired in and leading back to a 9 volt transformer. Can switch them all off if they go off while cooking.

These are just the normal ones you can buy. I soldered wires onto them.

So when an electrical fault cuts power and starts a fire, which is up there in terms of common causes of house fires, how well do your smoke alarms work?

Mains powered smoke detectors usually have a capacitor so that if the fire starts in the switchboard, or the circuit breaker gets switched off, you get alerted. Interesting idea though.

I recently tried tree different brands of batteries, but the smoke detector complained that they were all flat. I eventually realised that it was that smoke detector at fault, and the new replacement was happy with any of the batteries.

I thought that's what smoke detectors were for - to let you know when the food is done ...

Some smoke detectors like Elto don't always clear the flat battery flag when you put a new battery in. The cure seems to be pushing the test button after the new battery is in then the detector resets.

Guess I'll have to make a battery back up system eh? Smile
