The following is the reply I received from WCC -

"The disposal of electronic equipment is now filled by private companies throughout New Zealand. We recommend disposing of the equipment through RCN e-Cycle, who specialise in electronics recycling. The RCN Group (RCN) and Community Recycling Network (CRN) with funding from the Ministry for the Environment are proud to present RCN e-Cycle the first everyday consumer electronics recycling solution to all New Zealanders. Televisions and DVD players are accepted as general waste at the Southern Landfill. The rate for general waste is $105.10 per tonne, with a minimum charge of $6. The Southern Landfill is located on Landfill Road, off Happy Valley Road between Brooklyn and Owhiro Bay".

Looks like the Council landfill is the place for the odd TV and DVD player.

Didn't the government pay the warehouse to take back old TVsl; HOwever that may have only been for a limited time., Unless it is free, people will just dump them, and the cost should probably be built into the cost of new electronics stuff. That is how it is done overseas. I have heard of people buying a property, and funding old electronic things buried in the garden.

The warehouse thing - yes they did, that was for 2 weeks, between 4 and 2 weeks back. We tried to take one in after that and they turned us away.

And yes people will dump them rather than pay $6. $6 is not a lot, and illegal dumping fines might be very large, but I'm seeing stacks of TVs being dumped down the local rivers... the same deal as with cars when the put a measly $10 fee on dumping them.

That's crap, to be honest. I probably have to visit a landfill once every year or so, and my old CRT's will be stored until a trip is arranged - so it's not really costing me anything more. I don't know why this is so hard for some folks.

Looking at the garden refuse I need to turf, next trip might be two trailer loads ...

I tend to agree ... user-pays and all that, and as you say the $6 minimum could include a car or trailer load of garden tidy up as well a TV etc.

My last set of new tyres had an extra $14 added for disposal of the old ones .... it's the way we have to go I guess.

You tend to find that a lot of landfills distinguish between the type of rubbish that you are dumping and provide a preferential rate for green waste (garden clippings etc), with other items being charged at a higher rate.

Don't some tips forbid you to dump things like TVs with general refuse, and they charge a separate fee for TV dumping so they can then be recycled. In a way I can see why, as over time the TV will leach toxic chemicals into the soil.

I wasn't saying everybody does that, But the evidence is clear, since they started charging, the rivers are now littered with tvs. I'd go out and take some sample photos but this thread will probably be done by time I head out there next. I have never dumped anything like this, nor do I condone it, but as someone who has worked at the tip I know people are discouraged by the charge.

Not all councils offer inorganic collections as I recently discovered... "one" council for Auckland... yeah right.

Which one is that? Its on down beach haven at the moment if you have something that you need to dump. My streets already been picked up so no good putting it there and saying you live here unfortunatly.

Trash palace is $10 for all TV's, does not matter if they are CRT/LCD/Plasma/LED.

3.1 Is the Waste Prohibited from the Landfill?
Prohibited Wastes:
There are a number of waste streams that due to their inherent nature or characteristics can adversely affect the operation of a Landfill site and therefore should be prohibited from Landfill disposal. The following wastes are not suitable for disposal at Spicer Landfill:
• Bulk liquids (see next section 3.2 for definition of liquid waste)
• Radioactive wastes (unless it meets the disposal requirements specified by Section 14 of the Radiation Protection Regulations Act 1982)
• Lead acid batteries (lead acid batteries can be recycled in New Zealand)
• Used oil
• Explosives, flammables, oxidising or corrosive substances (as defined under the HSNO Act)
• Refrigerators or freezers, unless they have been degassed
• PCB wastes

As for TV's, if it does not meet the above, then it can be dumped. However, the fact that APPENDIX 2 does point out Cathode Ray Tubes cannot be dumbed.
