I switched from Gmail to Hotmail NZ a year ago and haven't looked back. I get an average of 1000 spam a day on my Gmail account and I found when I was using it, far too many legit emails got flagged as spam and lost. Hotmail has a much nicer and faster interface and I don't have any spam issues.
As for the new Gmail look... yuck, it is horribly broken in IE9.

to be fair ie9 breaks a lot of websites, I have found so many websites don't work properly, especially online banking sites. It is the worst browser. I use firefox, chrome or opera these days.

i check my hotmail virtually every day, and i've never had an outage that i recall. unlike gmail where i could not access my mail for a couple of days, and then lost the email history for a week...

I've got it on both my Google Apps accounts (free version) - but I have those accounts to accept the "beta" features from Google. You may have to enable that. And from memory you have to be using the English US (not UK) language to get these early releases too.
