MikeSkyrme: Agree with your comments re the equipment is required in order to carry out her job but disagree with the Lockwood Smith comment. He is following parliamentary rules regarding appropriation of funds, not deliberately trying not to comply.

I agree. I'm just suggesting he could have been more helpful in indicating a desire to find a solution. It is so clearly going to happen anyway, all the smoke around the issue just seems pointless.

Mojo is employed by the Green Party, she is only in Parliament through her place on the party list (i.e. she was not democratically elected to represent the people) Therefore the Green party should pay for whatever equipment their chosen representative needs to work for them in parliament out of the 6.5 million they already get to run their party.

The Green's knew this was coming and it is nothing but a low-blow publicity stunt. Why else would they elevate her on the party list over 20+ other Green members who got way more votes than Mojo?

At the end of the day she will get what she needs and the taxpayer will pay as usual. The only argument is out of whose budget the allocation will come from.

Edit:  I think Lockwood is quite correct, he has a budget and strict guidelines governing how and where that money must be spent.  Imagine the outcry if he just handed over the cash?  He couldn't win.

Lazy is such an ugly word, I prefer to call it selective participation

Taxpayers should pay, no matter how much it costs.

It was my understanding that the 30K wasn't for equipment (parliament were willing to supply that), the money was for the operators to sign to her or type up others conversations so she could 'see' the debate.

And if I'm right on that thinking then I don't see why the Greens can't fund the assistance out of their multi million support budget. (Parliament put in wheelchair ramps but they don't provide someone to push you up them....)

But it is politics, so theres bound to be more than 2 sides and consensus within the debate.......

Of course it should be paid for, and if anyone feels that funding should not be available to the disabled to allow them to work they should try being disabled.

I don't think many are arguing that kiwinz its the way its being used for political gain that most are annoyed at. Our money is there its just who will be allocated to pay it.

if this expenditure is baulked at what will be next, refusal to fund disabled toilets, ramps, Braille Signage etc etc .There is more than enough barriers to the disabled integrating now, no need to create more.

I speak from personal experience.

speedy23: I'm a bit hot on this too and I am right with Old3eyes and Stevenz. On the list and not voted in per se, what did she/they expect.... all seems a bit put on or put up. A bit tricky in that people with disabilities have every right to be treated equally, but they do have to go into things with their eyes open so to speak.

I was not aware she was not an elected officer and this changes this considerably for me.

Greens need to pay for this from their support budget. The end.

She is an MP, in Parliament because of the Elector approved and chosen electoral system, MMP.
This should be funded by Parliamentary Services.

Frankly I don't see this as any sort of barrier or thinking against disabled at all, its just being portrayed that way.

This is getting like the racial card that continually gets pulled out and I for one get sick of it.

I don't think it makes any difference. Especially with the way MMP works. Many people vote strategically with MMP. They also have to perform in exactly the same way in the chamber, no matter which they are.

When I first heard about this I thought 'Pay someone to type!? Why not just use speech-to-text?'. But since there will be various people talking (often at the same time) I guess there is no way a machine could cope, is there?

speech-to-text conversion of a voicemail i received the other day:

"Hi it's May just leaving them at Mary soon ciao we had to wait for my buck too as well as the income street that you thought I'd and see it and therefore we had it for about five with teeny."

and another:

Hello Crystal India are 216-7065 sex can just call me please I just got a question about that that did the different bars just wanting Doc right and I was not before making phone decision so I just calling in regard thanks bye bye.

so far my worst speech to text conversions were all from people calling in on vodafone mobiles... the best come from those calling in on direct SIP lines with decent audio codecs.
