The app is exactly the same on both iPhone and Android (apart from the stylishly different phone icons bar at the top, of course!) Screenshots are from iPhone 4S but also have it loaded on my Samsung Galaxy.

It seems to be giving the same forecast as the Metservice website - for christchurch that is. Even out to 23 May. Issue time date is the same at 1.10am 15 May. Rain radar looks pretty onto it as well - to within a couple of minutes. May not be the NZ metservice app - but is seems to be doing the job.

The tech guys tell me it's just repurposing our mobile site and displaying that, so the data is probably all the same - however, why would you rely on an app where the developer has no accountability for the data, when you can get your information direct from the [accountable] source? And I definitely have a problem with people stealing our good work and making money from it. At least our ad revenue supports further development of our forecasting and digital communications for the public here in NZ.

From my quick look at it in the past, all he did was grab the website view and stick it in a webview, like a small browser on your phone, its a direct link in.

Tough to answer that I guess. Of course nicking your data isn't on. But you've presumably allowed it to be nicked - which casts a shadow over the question on accountability. Perhaps the ad revenue does support  further development. But how is it that some bloke in Spain can create an Android App much faster than NZ'ers can? And as for accuracy of data - we all know Metservice can't produce 100% accurate forecasts so its probably to each end users tolerance for error that will be the decider. That said I'll be in when the NZ "officaial" app gets launched. In the mean time this rogue one gives faster forecasts through an app rather than me navigating to the m. website.

Because it's not an app, it's just a link to their site in the web view. I would think Metservice holds themselves to a higher standard than that, hence the delay.

Ah - so it is. The "app" however gets me to the web page quicker.  The m.metservice site is book marked but I have my browsers password protected so it takes a bit longer to get to the same place. Despite that, time to remove the "app". I can continue waiting for the official version - no point supporting the rogues out there.

I use the Nokia app on my phone and wonder where they get their data from.

Is the iOS version of the Metservice app out yet? Can't find it in the app store.

Also please make sure it gets released not just in the NZ app store, my account is still tied to the UK app store.

Anyone else noticed the MetService redirection is b0rked? I had the URL bookmarked but now they all go to the home page unless I go through and add www to each URL.

my http://m.metservice.com bookmark still works.

The sneak peek at http://202.21.130.171/services/android-app is about as good as we'll get. At this rate we can probably expect Facebook to follow Bebo and tank before we see this app.

Strange, installed MetService 1.0 App for iPhone, designed by }{shift developed by PaperKite, Monday 21st am. It works, no crashes but not great, many flaws and it appears to have been removed from the App Store.

Hi Doug - you have a sharp eye! We're fixing a last-minute bug before releasing so you must have found a tiny window in which to download what was up in the App Store. Apple are reviewing right now so the plan is to go live on Monday.

We will be monitoring feedback closely in the first couple of weeks in particular to ensure any issue picked up by users is dealt with ASAP. It'd be great to hear back from you on anything you have found in the version you dowloaded - just email feedback@metservice.com so the app development team get the info pronto.

Thanks for the heads up.

Cheers
Jacqui
