alexx: I need to get a very narrow and tall monitor.

Looks great on my 24" portrait monitor (which is also useful configuration for coding as it gives you 100+ lines of source code).

Just deleted the Herald from my toolbar ... I will be using only Stuff from now , absolutely hate it !!!!

I cannot stand stuff. They don't seem to employ any journalists. Mostly just a gossip column with a few syndicated articles that they don't even bother localising.

Their local content is always full of spelling, grammatical and factual errors and they use Twitter as a 'source' more often that any other mainstream news outlet I've seen.

Indeed.

The html is fairly clean, well apart from the advertising crap they gets injected, still some nasty document.write's in there. Looks like they started with html5boilerplate.

They should have got designed more layouts for different widths (ie: responsive design), then it wouldn't look so terrible on large screens.

It's funny how much people hate any drastic change, a large proportion will complain bitterly every time.. you have to sneak changes up on them gradually like a ninja.

The next time you see the ad on TV for the new Herald, at the end of it look at the example of the site they've used on the MacBook. It clearly shows a web site that uses the whole screen and has much greater spacing between columns and boxes.

That design looks far nicer, wonder what happened.

Definitely needed to be responsive design for a new website. Any new website should be designed with responsive design these days. I am a real fan of RD.

There's some influence from the New York times website there.

I don't think they've thought through their print edition very well. The text size and font makes it have the worst readability issues I've ever seen in a newspaper. Alot of people are going to cancel for that reason.

Not too fussed about the look of the new design one way or the other - while it could use improvement, the old one was pretty horrible as well. However, at least the old one loaded pretty quickly. The new one seemed painfully sloooooow when I tried it earlier today. I even wondered if my connection had somehow failed, it just hung for about a minute and a half before anything started to appear.

Re: the comparison with stuff, it's kind of moot. Stuff now seems to have virtually no content beyond stale reprints from overseas websites and Hollywood gossip. Who cares about the layout if there's nothing worth reading. At Work (Wellington) we dropped our DomPost (pronounced to rhyme with "compost", not "fence post") in favour of the Herald as at least the Herald still has actual news content.

I skimmed a print copy of today's Herald front to back this lunch time, well that's 3 and a half minutes I won't get back!

In making a comment I aim to make sure I am just not disliking change.

But I found the headline stories easier to view on the old site where it had the box with pictures. Whereas the new site is just a list of small text headlines which you have to read through and scroll down to see them all. It is lacking the visual aspect in the headline / popular story department. Also i dislike you have to click into each story to read it rather than just flicking through.

Thank god the nz herald iphone app has stayed the same. I love that app.

But they have recently changed that too on the ipad. They have now removed the top menu, so you have to open up a side menu on the side, which is more fiddly. Personally I like the SMH ipad app (prior to it's updated version) as the best new paper app. These companies seem to be releasing new versions which are worse and have less features than the older versions, which means updating them is a risk.

Doesn't look to bad to me, but I wish it would use the full real estate of my 24" monitor. Otherwise it just looks squished together in the middle.

on a Retina MacBook quality is just horrible for some images with text, too much white space
