Western Australia is the same. No wof there but they do road safety checks of cars and 'yellow sticker' them.

Really it's just moving the costs. Police end up doing a bit more work on the road.

It's just where you want to create the employment in our community and where we pay.

More Police = lower tax?

gzt: This is the reason I have insurance. Stuff happens and that is what insurance is for.

You do have to pay the excess unless you get a policy that will cover this, if you identify the other driver, and the insurance company can get this money back off the other driver. It is a real hassle when it happens to you, and I had to muck around with my insurer for a year before they refunded me the $400 excess, after an unsecured load fell off a truck hit my car. . The insurance company baycorped the uninsured driver, but they wouldn't pay, which is what led to the delay. Plus you probably lose your no claims bonus. None of those problems would have occurred if the other driver had 3rd party insurance. But maybe that is a cost that insured drivers have to bear for being able to get cheaper insurance in NZ.

I knew a hell of a lot of people through work in welly and kapiti that didn't bother with WoFs or rego on their getting-to-work hacks... strangely though, most were quite safe cars, just not enough hours in the day to get them tested when you do 12-14hrs at work.

And as for the tyre debate in the article on stuff... Is a WoF the only reason people replace bald tyres? Seriously? If that's the caase, just take their licence off them now and get them off the road!

Making it yearly won't save anyone any money. Wof already costs much less than the standard hourly rate. If its yearly the test will be more rigorous and take longer.
Another thing to consider, nzers are criminally negligent when it comes to car maintenance.

I wouldn't expect the price of a WOF to remain where it is if we go to an annual WOF.

More has to be checked keeping in mind it won't be inspected for another 12 months.
So things with 8 months life will get you a fail. There's more costs right there.

Having worked in the industry for quite some time, the thought of NZ cars switching to 12 month test scares the crap out of me.

There is a suggestion that the proposed changes are industry driven (fleet owners). For a business it's not necessarily the cost of the WOF it's the cost of the time associated with getting them. (Although personally I think that's just some marketing spin)

A change to the WOF period would see a nett revenue loss to the government, this can be be partly compensated for by raising the cost. And justified to users as a more comprehensive service done on an annual basis.

In tough economic times it makes no sense to me why any government would
- reduce revenue
- introduce a change that could effectively put 50% of all the WOF only operations out of business

...but then I'm not a politician...

I don't think organisations should be allowed to lobby governments to change the laws that benefit them, if that is what is happening. I heard the Dog and lemon author on the radio, and he said it sounded like a bad idea too.

The current WOF is used by many to check tyres. Why? For two reasons. People firstly don't have a tool or skills to accurately measure the tyre tread, or have the skills to know how a worn tyre looks. If it isn't wearing evenly then a tyre that may look like it has quite a bit of tread left, but the part in contact with the road may be totally bald. People also do not want to buy new tyres until they need to, as they are very expensive.So they will want to get as much life as they can out of the tyre before they replace it. A WOF will usually tell you which tyre will need replacing soon, even it it is legal, so people use this as a guide. I guess people could take their cars into a tyre shop to check, but as tyre shops are in the business of selling tyres, they may say a tyre needs replacing, when in fact it still has some life left.

And thats where the problem lies.. you are (allegedly) failing things that are broken now, not things that "might" break...

The job of the WoF inspector is not to "guess" what might be wrong in the future...

True, and that's where I get scared. As I mentioned before the majority of NZers do not maintain their cars correctly

My cars have mostly always had one yearly warrants, and it wasn't until last year that my current car dropped down to six monthlies... AND they are a pain! The time I have to take off work to take it down to my mechanic...

My current WOF expires in March, and I know I will need new tyres before then, which I will get, because I want a safe car.

Bring on extending the yearly WOF period to 10/12 years...
