It's not my thing to go to an event like this, BUT, have you never taken time off work, arranged leave or re-arranged rostered days off to go to something that is of interest to you that others may say is a non event?

People take time off work to attend concerts, rugby games, or something interests them and get some utility out of the event or outcome.

If people get the buzz of being in the same place as other people then I'd concur that some utility is obtained from such an event. Otherwise it is pointless.

Or are shift workers with rostered days off, or are students writing their thesis and have a few hours to sit at the pub and people watch...
