It was fantastic! It is one of the "rides" that I'd like to go and do again. I generally enjoyed the 3D/4D attractions more than the other attractions in the parks as they were so well done. Especially the Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man at Universal's Islands of Adventure - that was another well put together ride!

My point exactly. But Star Tours and the Spiderman ride I think use Showscan

which is 60fps but with 65mm film. So theoretically the resolution is greater than 4K which is what Peter Jackson was shooting with his Red cameras but film does wear out, especially when it's whizzing by the projector at 2.5x normal speed.

gzt: I see Embassy is offering 2D, 3D, and high frame rate 3D. I'll be going for the high frame rate 3D, but it makes me wonder what the other two offerings are, and why they chose that approach.

2d is for those who don't want anything to do with 3d. 3d is for those who don't want anything to do with hfr.

Anyone know the difference between Standard and Platinum seating at the Embassy?

What does platinum provide exactly, or conversely is there any reason to avoid it for 3D viewing?

Platinum is a section of seats, maybe 5 rows, at the front. They're wider and deeper than the normal seats.

They're pretty much optimum viewing height to the screen where regular seats are higher up so you're starting to look down on the screen a bit.

Thanks for that. Looking at the seating plan on the embassy website (access only during the booking process) it appears the Platinum seats are centre seats to the right of the wide aisle in this picture:

I was painfully navigating my way through the slow booking process and comparing seats available on different days and understanding the seating plan when the website went down.

During the booking process I noticed seating I had marked in previous sessions was 'reserved' red even though the time out from my previous booking sessions had long expired.

Also I may have navigated using some unanticipated paths during this time. I got the impression session management was a bit less than ideal. Just after that - their website went down*. Not intentional I promise! : ( but Event IT, feel free to contact me if that might help narrow down the issue.

So as far as i can see you can choose at event:
Standard 2D - 24p?
Digital 3D - 24p
HFR 3D - 48p

Wheres HFR 2D? Or is 'standard 2D' in 48fps?

You're correct about their placement.

I have had trouble booking tickets on their website when using Safari. If I switch to Chrome it tends to work with no trouble.

Same with Reading from time to time. It's a real pain because you choose the seats you want then you're hit with problems, so I go to another browser and my original seats are reserved :( And I'm never patient enough for them to be released or to get in touch with anyone.

The FAQ on the Hobbit site says:

Do I get a choice? Yes. The film will be released in multiple formats, including 2D, 3D, IMAX, IMAX 3D and HFR 3D. Check with your local theatre for the format of your choice.

Is HFR only available in 3D? Yes. The HFR version of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey will be available in 3D only.

Recent industry news indicates Warner made a decision to skip 2D HFR release after feedback from the preview screenings many months ago.

I'm glad I'm seeing the film in Wellington with the new gear at the Embassy in 3D HFR. If I was seeing the film in Auckland I'd want 2D HFR because my 3D experiences have varied wildly enough to think many theatres cannot get all the variables right for whatever reason.

Warners may have calculated that people open to new tech will see it in either HFR 2D or HFR 3D. Therefore Warners will not lose much revenue if they provide only HFR 3D option. IIRC the theatre upgrade required is the same for both. In my case I was planning to see HFR 3D and then HFR 2D. Without the HFR 2D option it is at least one less ticket from me.

I also read talk that additional post production had reduced aspects of some HFR 2D effects that some found challenging. No good sources for that part so it may be nothing more than uninformed speculation.

Jaxson: I'm not sure, haven't googled it, but what's the effective frame rate with active shutter 3D glasses? If you're dumping every other frame then you'd end up with close to 24 frames per second to each eye at 48 fps...

And yes, 24fps is basically sht on large medium+ speed panning shots. I'm loving the technical attempts from journalists to describe this 48 fps though, there's some good stuff out there. Like 48 fps ups the resolution, that one is cool.

I guess he could be referring to temporal resolution?

Shorter shutter open time will have less blur in each frame which most people would interprite as more resolution since to most people sharper=more resolution.

Now that it's opened, has anybody seen it and if so, how was the HFR 3D?

I saw it at a VIP event on Wednesday, and I have to say the HFR was nothing short of incredible..... fight scenes that you can actually keep track of, and panning that stayed smooth and in-focus.

but yes.... a bunch of dwarves take a walk and fight some stuff... with a short appearance by Smeagol to break things up
