Just re read my post and got my lefts and rights mixed up

We were approaching an intersection to turn right and the bus overtook us on the left to get to the front of the queue so as he could turn left ahead of us.

It's a bit of a nuisance when you can go back and edit these sorts of mistakes when you see them at a later time.

JimmyH: I usually do, if only for the simple reason that they are much bigger than my car and I will come off second best if we prang.

@Shock is right about the Wellington busses. It was OK a few years ago, but now it's atrocious. I think in the last 3-4 weeks I have:
- seen the red light on the bottom of Molesworth Street run by busses on at least two occasions, and I don't mean when the light had just changed!
- twice seen pedestrians scarper for their lives (on the same pedestrian crossing outside Rutherford House - when it was clear that a bus wasn't stopping for anyone)
- been unable to cross a street with the "green man" because a bus pulled right across the crossing before stopping for the red light (while pedestrians who had started to cross jumped back again).

I'm starting to wonder whether the drivers are having an informal competition to run people down?

On the subject of cycling, I don't cycle but always try and give them room when I drive past them. I am, however, getting irritated by the cyclists to go out in groups of 5-10 on the weekend around here, and ride three-abreast at a *very* leisurely pace chatting to each other on a main road, while the traffic banks up behind them. If they want drivers to show courtesy then they might want to reciprocate - keep left and single file please.

Lets be honest, of all places to put a pedestrian crossing lets put one at a bus terminal.. it's stupid

Also, correct me if I'm wrong, the majority of pedestrian v bus accidents haven't happened near crossings so buses running red lights in Wellington is a bit of a moot point really..

I had one in hastings fail to give way at a round about even though I was more than half way through it he pulls out from being stopped then when I hoot my horn the dumb arse stops right in the middle of the roundabout what a dick wad

I try to avoid the bus routes in the CBD. In the suburbs it depends on how far I am behind the bus and whether I have to cross the centre line or if theres oncoming traffic. Usually it's safer to let it pull out and pass it at the next stop.

At those same lights I've seen a bus stop at the red then go when the way was clear. Couldn't believe my eyes. Also in that same area, when I was 11 or 12 I stepped out in front of bus driving the wrong way down the bus terminal. I guess road rules dont apply in bus only lanes!

Just remember bus drivers are "professionals" and have had training. Back to OP no you do not have to give way to buses. I have always wondered why buses need to get to where they are going faster than I do.

I had one almost take me out one day, thankfully was in my mothers car which has a bit of get up and go...

Bus was in a bus bay, and as I was about halfway along the bus, he floors it and pulls out forcing me to take evasive action into the other (oncoming) lane to find another bus coming the other direction - I booted it and managed to zip ahead of the original bus and miss the oncoming one.... the original bus driver had the cheek to give me the bird and flash his lights at me.

I should have stopped and given him an earful - he wouldnt have had much choice but to listen as it was a very narrow road and with me blocking it, he wouldnt have had anywhere to go........ :) But had better things to do that day than waste my time with morons.

Had a few near misses back in the days of cycling everywhere, but back then, bus drivers had patience and courtesy.... but today.... Yeah, right.
