So what are people playing "offline" these days ? :) Still the classics ?

Ive just purchased Fallout after playing it at a mates a while back, was a lot of fun.

Also picked up King of New York, nice short game that the kids get into :)

I have been looking at Catan for the longest time. My Son is 10 now and I am wondering how feasible it is to play for him (he is pretty bright and can strategise well). What is the length of time for an average game? I considered buying it for my phone, but it's $15USD!

10 is fine for Catan, I believe it is rated as 10+ game, a game probably takes up to 2 hours. It is a 3 player game so I hope you have someone else to play as well(there are 2 player rule variants around, but I dont find them fun)

We used to play Catan with expansions for groups of three or more. We moved onto the online game to avoid setup & cleanup time - the more expansions - then the more work. But the app proved to be too buggy in 2018.

But nobody here has played Catan in 2019 because we have better options such as those designed by locals Shem Phillips (Garphill Games) and Sam Macdonald. They have two in the top 100 at boardgamegeek:

Architects of the West Kingdom (2018, 1-5 player, best 4-5). It is our favourite for replayability. We play it with all the expansions we can get - I think there's a major expansion coming out soon that also takes it to 6 player.

Raiders of the North Sea (2015, 2-4 players best 3)

They use a lot of symbols instead of words on the components to make it easier for non-English speakers to use plus it makes it easier to use the features that are shared with their other games.

For 5+ ages:

Azul is deceptively simple.

Carcassone and expansions.

For Christmas when I was a kid (in the 80's) I was given a game called Careers. That was really good and lead to many hours of fun playing against my sister (who usually lost and would storm off in a huffy) :)

Did anyone play Othello?

I enjoy playing Robert Kiyosaki’s two cashflow games. They are like a more advanced form of monopoly, but also teach a lot of useful financial skills for real life.

I always enjoyed Monopoly, which we played with a lot of home made variations that allowed the game to go a lot longer. Also, a board game called Airline I think.

We have been playing a bit of Monopoly Card game we got from Amazon as highly rated, which is fun.

xpd: Highly recommend Escape From Colditz but is getting hard to find complete now (couple on TM at the moment).

Get a good group who are keen to play, and can waste a good chunk of the day playing ;)

I have never really found boardgames terribly entertaining. Nobody played them much in our house growing up and I usually found it more pleasant to retire to my room and read or build models.

I ended up selling my copy as none of my friends around here are into board games at that level, they prefer Monopoly/Risk :)

There is a remake now available, but obviously with the swastikas removed.

If you like Monopoly, have a look see if you can find a copy of Poleconomy it is like an advanced monopoly, instead of properties you trade shares in NZ companies from around the late 70s. There is also a political element with a player elected as Primeminister and gets to set things like interest rates etc.

I recently played about 30 games of monopoly with a kid who LOVED it. It was soul-destroying. It was far too monotonous because there is realistically only one two-player strategy: stop the other player getting any sets while ensuring that you get at least one set and then raise the rents as high as you can. And that strategy is so dependent upon the roll of the dice.

It is also basically a zero-sum game: if I get something then you can't have it.

I'm just arranging a board game day with some mates in early December, all keen for Fallout but think I'll put a time limit on it :) Or else can waste a day on it ;)
