No its not.

But it depends on your setup.

For secure browsing I use an ssh tunnel with port forwarding. (putty) All my traffic including DNS requests is sent over the encrypted tunnel.

The DNS request is encrypted just like everything else so your ISP cannot read it. I tested this a while ago using Wireshark. All browsers will leak the DNS requests except for firefox when setup correctly.

The DNS request is ALWAYS sent on the remote side of the connection. What happens is a CONNECT request is sent to the proxy, in the form "CONNECT www.example.com:80" (for HTTP, it will be similar for SOCKS) and the proxy will handle the task of performing the DNS lookup. The connection between you and the proxy is still unencrypted and can be intercepted and analysed by Layer 7 DPI equipment - again, if your ISP feels so inclined which it is very unlikely they do.

Uh no, not if you're tunneling it over a SSH tunnel.

in a similar vain while doing my degree many years ago now had to jump through a few hoops to get freshmeat.net reinstated. They obviously thought it was porn.

ChevronX: ISP Service Desk's. Can they access your web history?

Have a friend whose partner works at an ISP and is concerned that they can view his history.

Is the friend or the partner the one that's concerned?

I doubt most ISP's would bother to log web history for customers but web usage at work by the partner would probably be logged.
