I hope you get a good backup service (cloud) if you go the way of local storage of email. At least if the email has any value to you.

Backups don't have to be in the cloud to be effective.

I have about half a gig of archived email that I refer to occasionally. It's archived to a new zip file on my PC monthly, plus manually when I do an archive run from IMAP to local storage. That backup is mirrored onto a disk in my shed every week, and after significant events I do a backup to offsite storage. I do happen to have both Mozy and Crashplan, and my local mail folders are backed to to crashplan.

FastMail.fm is a strong contender now. It's $40 - $45 per month, a friend recommended it, but it's only $5 - $10 cheaper than gmail. I don't like the idea of having all my email with google, so I may use fastmail to ensure diversity.

I doubt they will be very helpful.

As to backups, always important to have them off site as well as whatever you use for regular (and automatic) backups at home. Trusting that you will remember it yourself has been the cause of many a man crying.
