"The Century of the Self" - BBC documentary.

In the main the focus is on a nephew of Freud's, Edward Bernays who went to the USA and made small fortune out of applying psychological ahem 'mind control' techniques in advertising and for various political purposes.

http://vimeo.com/61857758

IIRC it was originally broadcast in four parts of one hour each. Entertaining all the way through but you don't really want to try watching it in one go.

For something even more bizzare than the anti-fluoride activists, there's always the good old Chemtrail conspiracy theory. They passionately believe that the water-vapour contrails left by aircraft are really chemical or biological agents that are being deliberately sprayed at high altitudes by shadowy government agencies for sinister and undisclosed purposes.

There have been a few letters to the editor in the Dompost about it recently.

Maybe we could combine all the conspiracies into one uber-conspiracy theory to really get them going, something like - contrails are really a giant conspiracy to undermine dental health by spraying us all with fluoride from aircraft, and it's all secretly orchestrated by the Illuminati, Plunket and local Rotary clubs? The only way to protect yourself is to put a pair of underpants on your head, shove pencils in your nose, hide under your desk and respond to all questions by loudly shouting "Wibble!".

I've been accused of being an NWO shill for disagreeing with these clowns.
One discussion on Trade Me spilled over into my youtube channel - quite nasty and spiteful individuals.
I get the same from 9/11 truthers. I've been called an NWO/Illuminati shill a good couple of dozen times now.

I'm an ex-conspiracy-nut too, so I know the headspace very well. The chemtrail conspiracy though... that never clicked with me.

BBC Conspiracy Road Trip: 9/11. Well worth checking out if you can find it. There's also one on Creationism and UFOs (a bit dull the UFO one.)

A comedian takes some "truthers" on a road trip to see if he can convince them that their "inside job" conspiracy is rubbish.

He succeeds, to a point, but some of them just don't budge.
One of them, Charlie Veitch, was pretty big in the truther blogosphere for a bit, even getting to meet with Alex Jones and David Icke. When he publicly proclaimed he was no longer a truther, it got REAL ugly. Death threats, mountains of vile abuse, and hoax emails on his mailing list telling everyone (including his family) that he was a paedophile.

(Of course, it's all part of the conspiracy hahaha)

The films of Adam Curtis, The Power of Nightmares is a good example are all available on YouTube. I don't know if they actually qualify as conspiracy films as they don't reveal any 'secret' knowledge but I found them great watching.

I have that on DVD, the ISO is available for download at the archive.org. It's interesting because it's not a "conspiracy" but an analysis of two different ideologies (Islamism, NeoCon) battling each other in a modern world, including the circumstances that helped create and shape each other.

Nothing about "New World Order", "Illuminati" and so on. Just history being documented.

I agree, they don't count as conspiracy films.

However, these certainly broadened what I understood about history and revealed new information to me. I would also say they come from a different perspective than a lot of other presentations of history.

There is another of his films, sorry can't remember which, goes into the development of Game Theory at the Rand Corporation. Again, not secret knowledge or anything like that but a very interesting look at a part of history I didn't know a lot about.

Personally, I think anything like a Classical Conspiracy is going to be fallacy as people large organisations simply wouldn't be capable of maintaining something like that due to a lack of competence.

Someone noted in an article yesterday (sorry, won't be looking for it) that three million people have access to security systems with Top Secret clearance in the USA.

It would be too much to expect complete secrecy all the time with this many people around.

THanks for the replies guys, I'm reading through your suggestions... I've just taken a weeks leave, so may get around to watching a few of these soon...

surfisup1000: Not a film, but, "24" TV series has a good season where corruption goes to the top.

Had a good laugh when I read this - I love the show 24.... they're bringing it back for a mini series soon too :P

but you're dead right.. corruption all over the show, and only one man to stop them all.

haha!

Yet someone like Snowden coming forward with evidence of the u.s security establishment exceeding it's statutory mandate does not happen everyday. Illuminati aside lol, The fact is most people do not go and reveal these things.

No, it doesn't happen every day, but chances are it will happen one time or another: Edward Snowden, Bradley Manning, William Felt (Deep Throat)...

What makes Snowden different from Deep Throat?

One is a hero, the other a traitor? The Washington Post clout?

Meh, I like Michael Moore but I thought he was reaching in that movie. Too much speculation without enough hard evidence to ground it, made it too easy for detractors to discredit. I think he is at his best with naturally one-sided issues like gun control and the American health system in Bowling for Columbine and Sicko respectively.
