Being streetwise is always a good thing to do. I have grown up in and around a city the size of Auckland (Oslo), and it has its good and bad places. Stupidest thing you can do is get drunk and crawl around the bad areas..

Get to know the All Blacks. Get to hate the Wallabies. Learn to be patient with the Black Caps and learn to dislike the All Whites and their knob of a coach.

Here its soccer and winter sports that are the big gatherings.

What City are you moving to?

Will first stay in Napier for about a year, and then move on down to the Wellington area.

Football. There is no such thing as soccer.

You do not have to jump on the All Whites bandwagon. They are rubbish and their coach is a joke.

It's definitely soccer to most of us in NZ. Even if we belong to a football club.

Asserting it's 'football' used to be, and probably still is, a way to assert that it's the preeminent version over its bastardised descendents: rugby, league, aussie rules and american rules.

Norwegians don't even bother to indicate where they are going anymore. And people typically "park" in the left lane which is supposed to be used for overtaking someone on the motorway.

In addition we have narrow roads and you can forget about anyone letting you past. For one because there is usually no room, and also because people just don't care.

It might be because I have been in holiday mode when I have been in NZ, but I have always enjoyed driving in NZ and think people over all are considerate. At least a whole lot more than they are here.

And on the subject of roads...

Just because it has an impressive name like State Highway One and the line on the map is thick don't expect too much. It will probably only have one lane in each direction outside of the cities, but people will still drive at 100 km/h or try to.

I can't believe the amount of people trashing NZ and NZ'ers lets face we are not some strange species of the human race just have a different culture like most others.

Maybe some of you should focus not the negative nor make out the grass is any greener elsewhere

On the subject of tipping: Tipping jars/cups/etc, seem to have sprung up in a great number of different eateries in the last few years. But don't feel obliged to tip; it's not an expectation here.

Its not really a NZ thing though. When "strangers" (not your closest friends) ask you how you are doing, they are not looking for a full report :)

Slightly off topic, but, if the service is above average, I don't mind tipping.

If the service could be better, I like to write down a couple of points they can focus on improving and leave that in the jar instead......

I can't think of anything you need to know...But please contribute to the flow of society's shopping and transport facilities by walking up and down escalators. If you have a bad knee or similar, stand to the far left for the convenience of everyone else.

Last time I checked there were like 35 million (give or take) sheep roaming around.

EDIT: If you are in a split house, secure more smoke alarms than usual. Your neighbor more than likely has a cheap oil heater from The Warehouse running 24/7. It is a good idea to have them anyway.

I think you mean "countries other than the USA" (excluding New York, obviously)
