NonprayingMantis: Well all the politicians and central government is in Wellington, so there would be some upside at least from a major quake down there.

Just want to apologise for this post.

I meant it as a light hearted joke to try and bring the mood up a bit - obviously it didn't come off like that at all, so I retract it and apologise.

Cool. Thanks. We are all pretty 'shaken' down here

To give some substance to OP's concerns, a while ago due to comms fault in wgtn the auckland rail system was ground to a halt, a relatively simple issue in the big picture but caused absolute havoc auckland wide, an extended issue would literally bring Auckland to its knees, thinking even bigger picture how would NZ fare with both Akld and Wgtn in chaos?

No need to apologise to me, I saw it for what it was.

Sure, and I did it too. But I got reports from other users who didn't like it...

So I take it we need to all walk on egg shells in case we offend some people.

Making jokes or making light about bad situations is sometimes a great way at moving on.

I'm surprised that some people took offense.

I think there are places and places. If you read around here we let a lot of stuff go through. People are pretty relaxed at joking at each other... Except when the joke involves saying some people dying would be a good outcome.

Just the PC brigade took offence I'd guess ... remember you are not allowed to have your own opinions or sense of humour these days in case you hurt someones feelings.

Offense is something that is taken, not a given. Even the expression is accurate, I have "taken offense" to your stupid comment.

Personally I'm not the kind of person who walks around on egg shells in case I hurt someones feelings. People need to grow thicker skin and stop being so easily offended.

I agree, though people need to be a little more understanding, in a situation like this your fight/flight instinct kicks in making you more jumpy and easily "fired up".

Having said that, I think this part of the discussion has been beaten to death like an old horse, nothing much further to be gained, neither party is likely to budge much.

I'm starting to take offense - that I'm getting emails in my inbox referring me to this thread to talk about political correctness instead of the OP's discussion.
