If you feel the walk to Uni is too much up hill, there is this thing called the Cable car :)

Didn't know the cable car went to massey.

Vics main campus is on the hill next to the cable car. Massey is on the flat.

Not always. Some years ago the Auckland City council mandated the minimum parking per hour cost for all car park buildings so that their own car parks were were not undermined..

I'd be interested to see any references to this - or was this quite some time ago and no longer the case? Certainly noone I know in the parking industry seems aware of it being a current requirement.

It would have been 10 ~15 years + ago. If I come across anything I'll post a link..

I didn't know that a 2km walk that climbed only 35 metres was worthy of being called "all UP hill" :)

It's an interesting thing. Parking in CBD too pricey, people will find alternatives.

I think it can kill a CBD.

I was in Hamilton a few weeks ago, went down from Auckland for a nephews 21st in the City, so thought we would stay in a CBD hotel. Stopped in at The Base on the way down - pretty full and buzzing. Went into Hamilton CBD about 2pm on the Saturday and it was like a ghost town - tumbleweed would not have surprised me. If I had not had a car park booked with the hotel, finding one right outside would not have been a problem, except that I would have had to pay for it...

So, Hamilton City Council charges for parking no-one seems to use in the weekends, but people go to the Shopping mall where it is free... I'd be stoked (NOT) if I owned a business in Hamiltons CBD.

That's exactly it - the mall owns the land and the shops, they tack the price of parking onto the rent for the shops. The city council has the option of doing that with CBD rates and council owned carparks, but they don't. The problem they have is that if they don't have parking meters in the CBD, the office workers will park there all day, leaving no space for the shoppers, so some time limiting is necessary.
