alasta: I would strongly advise against using Optus. I have had extremely painful experiences with slow speeds, poor coverage, and extremely awkward processes to view your data usage. I definitely wouldn't use them again.

I use all three networks on a daily basis, and while all are acceptable, I find Vodafone to be the best for coverage and data throughput, Telstra a close second and Optus lagging behind a bit. But certainly in terns of value I think Optus are the best.

This is in Melbourne tho, Sydney could be totally different.

To be fair my Optus connection didn't work too badly in the Sydney CBD or on my travels between Melbourne and Philip Island. Unfortunately it became utterly useless in Queensland where there was no signal in some highly populated parts of the Gold Coast, and even in the Brisbane CBD the data speeds were a painful 1mbps.

Thanks again for everyone's input. I talked to Vodafone in Australia via online chat on Friday and I will purchase one of their $30 starter SIMs with 3GB of data. Tethering is allowed and they have a presence at the airport. Looks to be my best all around option.
