BTR: I have been randomly pulled over at 2am while sober driving the Mrs home. Cop was heading the other way and did a u turn and pulled me over for a random test. It didn't bother me one bit and I thanked him for helping keep the roads safe from drunk drivers and carried on.

I don't understand while people have to be nasty or smart to cops when they are just trying to keep us all safe.

I guess we should all be able to poke a bit of fun at each other from time to time and my comment above about recruitment omitted that the cop definitely knew I was joking with him, but I think police work is one of the most difficult jobs out there. People don't like being controlled, yet we all need it at some point and for every story of extreme police behaviour there is one of extreme civilian behaviour.
It's a reciprocating process, civilians notice smart/arrogant cops, cops notice smart/arrogant people. After a while it becomes ingrained and that's a real issue. Youtube and social media are exposing police brutality but it's not really helping the issue, it's making it worse.

I felt a bit sorry for the cops yesterday, the police chase that ended in a collision with an Audi, all over the news last night, talkback were onto it etc but somehow the news forgot to mention they had been chasing that driver for quite a long time, all through town and twice past my office.

I know a few police and yeah I bet they can be arrogant at times but think about being spoken to , lied to, looked down upon and assaulted day in and day out, it has to have an effect on how you treat people in return. Police are people, generally good, and we absolutely need them, they deal with people with extreme feelings all day, which society/media help create, in addition they are asked to do things they don't always agree with, (remove peaceful protesters from legitimate protests, dish out menial fines for example), we say don't shoot the messenger but we forget sometimes that we are all part of that society yet few are willing to consider their own actions/thoughts as part of the issue.

Yes, random breath testing is a thing.

I was pulled over a few weeks ago... police officer explained I had been "going a bit fast" (I wasn't) .. anyway I was then asked to count to ten for the machine, then got to blow into a tube. They gave me the tube to keep, because he said it contained my saliva. I imagine if their intent was to create a database of everyone's DNA, they would instead keep the spittle tube :) Then he thanked me for "responsible driving"...

Wait? "going a bit fast" and "responsible driving" ????

Yeah, I know right... a bit weird huh. I think "your car has a spoiler" was closer to the point, or "I didn't meet my quota yet" :) Anyhow, it didn't really bother me, at least he was polite and didn't muck me around any longer than required.

They have been for ever. "A licence to drive a motor vehicle is a privilege"
Think of the amount of people that drive with no licence, rego, wof... I'm sure you've seen motorway patrol. :-D

Referring to OP, not the above comment. If you were born in NZ after something like 1970 it's very likely your DNA (in the form of a blood sample) is being stored by the National Screening Unit. http://www.nsu.govt.nz/current-nsu-programmes/924.aspx

Probably thought you were a boy racer and therefore probably doing _something_ you shouldn't be. ;)

At one stage (5 or so years back?) they did have to fill a quota of a certain number of "contacts" in a given time period. Didn't have to ticket them or arrest them or anything, just had to have a recorded contact with a member of the public. Whether this is still the case or not, I've no idea.

I've been pulled over for RBT's a fair bit as I tend to drive through a couple of areas they frequently set up stops, the officers are usually pretty polite. Got pulled over when I was out for a ride on my fathers Ducati once down near Havelock and the lady officer was determined to do me for something, spent a couple of minutes checking the bike over and basically doing an on-the-spot WOF (on a ~1 year old bike). She seemed quite angry she couldn't pin anything on me, it was pretty wierd.

Then there was the time I was in an Audi A4 & wearing a suit while driving through a dodgy part of the Hutt dropping a mate off to pick up his car after work, RBT checkpoint, the officer just grinned at me and did the detector routine. He probably figured I wasn't part of the regular clientele of the pub they were situated near.
