old3eyes: We're now crossing to our reporter on the scene

This has always done my head in. The story is the story regardless of where the report is coming from.
It's amusing for the weather for sure, but it's plain pointless when they're trying to convey this image of having their finger on the pulse by reporting from a dark street one block over from the action etc. It's just mental most of the time.

I remember when the news was a half hour show, much like Prime does now. Read the new and got on with it. Then they included Holmes for 20 minutes, and then he got his own show afterwards and then then they pushed him out to after that, so suddenly the news was a full hour and with a stupid half news show after it. All full of padding and crosses and skipping the fact that NZ is not that big for day to day news.

Prime are doing it very right with their 5:30 bulletin, but it's not in HD...

The news still is a half-hour show. It just now takes a full hour to deliver it.

Take out 17-20 minutes of commercials. Then take out the obligatory non-news single-digit-IQ "human interest" filler, the carefully scripted ad-libs between the presenters, the self-serving promos, and the weather in Australia and Vanuatu (WTF with that?) and you are left with slightly under half an hour of news.

Or, more accurately, half of that should be classified as "olds" not news - as it was broken by the decent news channels (Al Jazeera, BBC, CNN) or online the day before.

I had been forgetting just how bad it has become. But I stayed somewhere over Christmas. Couple of rainy days, with only free-to-air TV and no DVR to deal to the ads. It was painful. It's fair to say the TV was mostly turned off and we swiftly found other things to do in the evening. Quite fun in the end ..... it's been years since I have played many of the old board games .....

I have noticed that the presenters are looking a bit off. I have a feeling that they are using a green screen studio, and the colour settings on the camera is off. The background looks okay, but the chromakeying is a bit off. I am sure this pain will look great in its hd glory later on.

Also, nightline seems to be back - just renamed '3 News'. Presumably this is before the Paul Henry show begins.

BINGO!!!!! WE HAVE A WINNER

They are using a blue screen studio at the moment while the current studio gets fitted for HD cameras
I kind of wish they'd keep a late edition of the news even with the Paul Henry show
so it would kind of go like this

Freeview satellite needs to provide a decent quality SD picture before even considering going HD. Seriously, the compression is atrocious.

I think that is one reason they don't have sport on it anymore. When there is lots of fast moving complex objects on the screen, it just turns into a compressed mess.

Yes, that's really where it shows. A still frame actually looks perfectly fine, but as you introduce motion the pixelation becomes a major problem.

Frankly I think they've tried to cram too many channels into the limited bandwidth they have available on D1. Since Freeview satellite is really an infill service they should just include core channels like TV3, Prime, and maybe two or three others. Actually Prime is irrelevant now anyway since the Sky feed has been opened up.

I wish they would just drop those silly +1 channels and use the bandwidth freed up to increase the bitrate on the main ones. Watched a bit of FV satellite where I stayed over Christmas, and was surprised how bad the picture quality was.
