NZHerald: The words "This truck driver was on his phone" flash over the screen seconds before the clip of the horror crash - but police now concede the driver was not on his phone at all. "There was a simple misunderstanding over the information supplied with the video, which led to the wrong caption being used. We can confirm there was no mobile phone involved," a police statement said.

That's not a great look.

The whole point of this video and others is to highlight something that cannot be edited out, reshot etc etc is road deaths, the overall message is what counts.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

So a little white lie is ok then?

Nope. Bad form from police. The healine should be "Hero truck driver avoids even bigger problem by controlling its truck while a retard is driving on the road."

The other Ad currently running is not true either, time does not stop.

If people heeded the message and didn't nitpick the details more lives would be saved.

Yes it is about reducing road deaths BUT how can anyone take the video seriously when the main message is about distractions caused by something like a cellphone yet it is obvious as the nose on your face that the accident in the video was caused by driver stupidity.

After seeing something like this I'm left wondering. Seriously you want me to worry about using a cellphone while driving yet you don't appear to be concerned about the stupid actions of the driver who really caused the accident. You guys need to sort out your priorities.

The priority of saving lives is not important? I suppose being pedantic is.

Perception and interpretation are everything.

It's unfortunate that the Police had this little accident, because it affects how people will respond to this advertisement and road safety messages in general.

Saving lives through road safety advertising is not just about 'pushing a message'. It's about understanding how people react to a message and accurately delivering on it.

In this thread you can see how most people reacted! It wasn't 'man, I'm gonna put down my phone', it was 'hmm, I don't actually think the message matches what I see to have happened.'

Personally, all the literature I've seen has suggested that hard hitting negative/critical ads fail to modify the behaviour of the most risky drivers. Most people don't change their behaviour simply because they are told to.

If they lie with "think of the lives we're saving" what else they can be lying to us about?

If citizens accepts these lies at face value, because "think of the children" or "we're saving lives" how can we be sure they are telling us the truth when some other issue arises?

Lying, regardless of good intentions should not be the message.

Saving lives is good. Lying is not. Two separate issues.

So the current Ad with the cars coming to a stop the drivers getting out to talk about should go, its not true time cannot stop.
The Ghost chips Ad should go, after ghost are not real.

But I guess the message is not important. Maybe they should use another method, using a phone while driving $5,000 fine. For every 5kmh over the speed limit, $10,000 fine and 1 years loss of licence. Speeding by 20kmh over speed limited $10,00 fine 1 years loss of licence and motor vehicle seized and crushed .Causing and injury accident, $10,000 fine and five years loss of licence. Causing accident resulting in deaths, minimum 10 years imprisonment and permanent loss of licence. Three strikes on speeding, using cellphone whilst driving permanent loss of licence.

How can anyone NOT take that video of real life seriously regardless of an erroneous caption?

It's surely adequately shocking that the underlying common sense message "pay more effing attention when driving you morons" is loud and clear? Not using your phone is also common sense (what call is THAT important?) even if not the specific cause of this accident.

Lying is not the message.  The message is pay attention and be cautious when driving.    This whole "The man is lying to us so the message is invalid!" thing does strike me as a little disingenuous...

The police appear to be saying wrong information was supplied with the video which led to the wrong caption being used. Taken at face value 'lying' might be going a bit far to describe that situation.
