Can I print some Bitcoin?

All comments are my own opinion, and not that of my employer unless explicitly stated.

No, silly, you download them and then carry them home through customs.

Re: the transmutation of elements, it's quite funny. Although it's hardly surprising that they got the basic science wrong. Stuff/the Dompost (rhymes with compost) stopped being a serious newspaper, with actual content and knowledgeable staff, some years ago. These days I'm about as surprised that a story this daft ran in the Dompost as I would be to hear that it ran in the National Enquirer.

Re: weapons, I'm a bit amused at the hysteria over printable guns. Anyone with highschool level metalwork competence and a bit of time on their hands has been able to make a working gun, anything from a single shot pistol type arrangement to an actual working sten gun, using only tools and parts from somewhere like Bunnings and a plumbing outlet for years. Either using their own design skills or plans that are readily available. Prisoners and gangs make simple guns all the time. It's not exactly a new risk/capability.

bugger printing gold or guns... I'd just print everything I ever needed and never leave the house again.

105" TV? Done!
New phone? Done!
Food? Done!
Beers! DONE!

If you need me, I'll be the fat drunk on the couch watching TV.

And in all seriousness, I could buy a lathe and build a gun cheaper than I could 3D print one.

Just to think: if Earnest Rutherford had thought to swap the leads over when he split the atom, he would have created the world's first 3d printer.

Funnily enough, the biggest commercial use of 3D printing seems to be printing plastic parts for new 3D printers.

Shades of ostrich farming and angora goats and other industries where producing the producer was the cause of a huge price bubble. Be in quick before the market is saturated!

Also interesting, printing fabrics http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-2509284/Victorias-Secret-talks-Tamicare-Cosyflex-3D-print-underwear.html could change the clothing industry.

I'd guess that 3D metal printing, which seems to be an up-and-coming technology, may be very good for vintage car enthusiasts where parts are increasingly difficult to acquire.

Big deal, I will just print a new market if this gets saturated.

Oh man, if we'll be able to print elements ('may' be possible? Good enough for me!) then I'm going to print some uranium for my 3d printed nuclear reactor! World energy problems solved! I just need to print a catapult that can fling the waste in to space.

Good thinking; if you put it in the dryer it just shrinks.

Must remember that next time someone talks about  shrinking market share.

I think this has already been done.  The technique is known as "Self Replication".
