Re: the transmutation of elements, it's quite funny. Although it's hardly surprising that they got the basic science wrong. Stuff/the Dompost (rhymes with compost) stopped being a serious newspaper, with actual content and knowledgeable staff, some years ago. These days I'm about as surprised that a story this daft ran in the Dompost as I would be to hear that it ran in the National Enquirer.

Re: weapons, I'm a bit amused at the hysteria over printable guns. Anyone with highschool level metalwork competence and a bit of time on their hands has been able to make a working gun, anything from a single shot pistol type arrangement to an actual working sten gun, using only tools and parts from somewhere like Bunnings and a plumbing outlet for years. Either using their own design skills or plans that are readily available. Prisoners and gangs make simple guns all the time. It's not exactly a new risk/capability.

Funnily enough, the biggest commercial use of 3D printing seems to be printing plastic parts for new 3D printers.

Shades of ostrich farming and angora goats and other industries where producing the producer was the cause of a huge price bubble. Be in quick before the market is saturated!

Also interesting, printing fabrics http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-2509284/Victorias-Secret-talks-Tamicare-Cosyflex-3D-print-underwear.html could change the clothing industry.

I'd guess that 3D metal printing, which seems to be an up-and-coming technology, may be very good for vintage car enthusiasts where parts are increasingly difficult to acquire.
