OK so if the Council have no interest it means that it's not on any notable or heritage list. The RMA has been changed tostop Councils having a blanket ban on all tree work. Spindly Pohutukawa are prone to having the ooccasional branch twisted off on windy days but I think your main risk is just the rubbish from leaves and flowers on the path. $1500 seems OTT, try another estimate after the power co trim. Maybe get some advice on removing some smaller trunks and trimming others.

xpd: LOL, we want the thing chopped down so we can have firewood ;)

We got some pohutukawa for firewood a couple of years ago after a friends tree was damaged in a storm. Burns really well.

I don't see what the issue is now. Its been mentioned that its on your property so its your issue. If you don't want the tree then get it in writing from the council that its not protected and get it cut down.

Doesn't sound to hard to me.....

And an update... council have said 100% that the tree can be removed, its not protected in any way, shape or form.

However...gets interesting... they have on record, an application (which was granted) to remove a large tree from the property a number of years ago, but on the condition another large tree was planted (which according to them should now be about 8m tall).
WE can be fined if the council decides to check this, and find its not been done - which it hasnt. Theres only one other tree on the property and its not even 4m tall. My wife said to the council guy, thats stupid, how are we meant to know of 1) that application and 2) the application had conditions.

Weve only been there 3 years.

So now Ive got some more ammo to go back to Vector with and hopefully theyll play nice and take ownership of the tree...... but because there are Chorus line sin the tree as well, they probably wont want to and want Chorus to come to the party, which so far, Chorus have told me "tough, suffer".

Trying to get these 3 parties to talk to one another will be an impossibility.... be fun trying tho ;)

The Approval and conditions from council will be registred on the LIM of the property (you did get a LIM when you bought the place?),
If its not registed on the LIM then council have no comeback on you...

Dont remember seeing it on there.....

The "small" tree that is on the property, could be around the right age from what the council were saying, but isnt an equivalent replacement for what was chopped down...so wonder if previous owners did a cheap "fix"....

Who said it was cheap, have you seen the prices of Bonsai trees? It takes time and skil to make a dwarf tree ;-)

I see Wellington are being ridiculous with one of their Heritage Pohutukawa that has a branch overhanging a busy footpath. If you are over 6' you'll wack your head on it. Rather than allow pruning it's claimed that the Council suggested reflector lights on the branch. Auckland used to have a woman that used to train or prune young branches that she could see would be a problem. They kept taking her to Court trying to stop her. She's gone to the great compost heap in the sky now but the saga makes interesting reading if you can find it.

This thread reminded me of a story in Aussie about a family who were caned or creating a firebreak around their home. When the bushfires came a few years later their house was the only one in the area left standing.
