sen8or: IIRC the search of phone also applies for the sin of talking/texting while driving, I remember something about officers having the power to check your ph records to verify said offence, could be totally off base there though
So i was just curious if you had to give them the password and how did you guys know i meant phone?

ronw: I suggest you use the time honoured National MP defense - memory. John Banks could give a few pointers also. Its so hard to remember these numbers. Interested that in the Pitorius trial in South Africa he claimed he could not remember his unlock code and police seem to have just accepted this. As I understand it in a case like that Apple will unlock phone. Failing that there are ways that can bypass the unlock code surely any major police force would have access to such technology?

KiwiNZ: Hmmmm, these threads. Why ask for legal advice on a tech forum?
queenstown: Sorry It was just out of curiosity as i forgot to put a lock on my phone. Was just curios if i had locked it if i had to give them the password because they asked me for the password but i told them it didnt have any. Also yes i am aware that they can just check with the service provider. But you know I just didnt want my privacy breached as i was sign into facebooks and email addresses on that account and my contacts.

sbiddle: All SMS messages in NZ are stored at the request of the NZ Police anyway. All that is required is a warrant to access them.
