I came across people like this all the time while studying Computer Science at University.  I still occasionally come across them working as developers.

It is probably best that the thread has been removed but it was mildly amusing while it lasted and for those who were not amused well they are adults and they just ignored it. laughing

I was a bit worried that this post signalled a change in policy to crack down on soapbox posts. Very glad to see this was a one-off ban. For all of its flaws, the 2degrees post was at least entertaining, and any rule changes to try and crack down on repeat performances would very much do more damage than good.

I am surprised that you (JohnR) are not banned yet... after years and years of trolling.....!

This is unfair!

I'm astounded he hasn't been banned for those thousands of unfinished sentences. Crimes against grammar!

freitasm: Well, I know they are because I watched The X files - in the original run back in the 90s and then again a few years back on Netflix. Great documentary!

Teen/Uni student Salty religiously tuned in for his weekly dose of Gillian Anderson.

I was watching that thread with a lot of interest. I was wondering why it was allowed to go on for as long as it had, especially since by page 2 it was already pretty clear that it was just a platform for the regulars to make fun of the OP. :P

How is a comment like this any better than what the banned user was doing?

mattwnz: Maybe preventing new posters from starting a new thread, unless they have made 5 posts in existing threads, could be an idea to stop it occurring. This is what some forums do to stop this, and to also stop spammers.

I disagree with this idea too.  You will stop new users coming to GZ for help and the realising how useful GZ is and staying on to become a valuable member of this community.  You will also promote people posting mindless responses just to reach their qualifying post count in order to start their own threads

johnr: Maybe first thread & post are first viewed by a mod and needs to be approved that it meets FUG

Does this not happen already for new user posts to identify spam?  Maybe there is another system in place.

There is already a system that people can use to call in the almighty moderator.

Is TimA correct mods?  You rely on other members reporting spam posts (or "stumbling" across them yourselves)?

How many new users are set up each week out of interest?

Not a bad system.

Really it would only be <1% of posts that are spam.

I for one reported that spammy thread. Now it's gone (and pretty quickly).

As if we needed more conspiracy theorists in the world. I bet these are the same folks that believe in contrails/chemtrails, HAARP, UFO coverups and other crap.

We have automated routines in place to automatically detect spam words, spam accounts, login from suspicious IP addresses, geo restrictions (users in some countries can only post if trusted), etc. We can't read all the posts that come in a day (thousands of posts a day) so the community helps a lot by reporting suspicious activities such as spam, FUG breaches, etc.

Everyone is a "moderator" in a sense. Once a post is reported moderators are notified and will deal with it - removing the post, banning the user, editing post, or just clearing the report as sometimes we don't think it's a breach. We receive a few reports a day but the average is pretty low.

This involvement is what makes Geekzone a great community.
