I guess that could be a security risk if there are noses left lying around :-)

Got involved in the "Numb Bum 24" hour motorcycle ice marathon one of the coldest years they ran it..

Was frostbitten within the first 2 hours. Sent to the propane heated recovery tent to thaw out. Ears unbelievably painful.. Tip of my nose was damaged, has never been the same, left a (small) permanent scar - permanently changing my noseprint!

My noseprint was irrevocably changed 20-odd years ago while I was teasing a cat.

Paul1977: Simplest way is to try.

First see if you can even register your nose, and then ensure that it consistently unlocks the phone using your nose.

Then, go to a busy mall and press your phone up against multiple random strangers noses - the more the better.

If yours is the only one that unlocks it then you are on to a winner.

Can I borrow your phone for this please?
I'm not having hundreds of people put their icky noses on my phone, thanks very much.

Owww! The risk of frostbite is something I will have to learn to get used to. I don't understand that kind of cold yet. People told me when it's that cold you have to pee with urgency. I didn't believe them. I just hope that CCTV footage is not kept for long because I learned the hard way.
When I married, it was -24C. Got married in an ice chapel at a snow village and hooned around the forest in a dog sled for half an hour after the ceremony. People said to be careful because when you stop feeling the cold you are headed for trouble. We then went up the mountain and I decided to show these canuks that Kiwis are tough. The windchill factor made it even colder but there I was, being blown around on the mountain, telling people it wasn't that cold so there was no reason not to get photos in my gown. Off came the down coat, hat, scarf, gloves, and the photographer, who was dressed like an arctic explorer, raced around getting photos. Hubby had to strip to his suit too of course (he didn't divorce me right after). The photos actually look good because my skin had gone from looking somewhat sunburned to a lovely, pearly wax colour. Having proven how tough Kiwis can be, I never mentioned the agony when we went back into warmth. I know now that the reason I wasn't cold was hypothermia and the colour changes of my skin heralded frostbite.

All that to say, that if the agony I went through was even a fraction of what you must have suffered then I understand you went through sheer hell. You have my sympathy and an incredible amount of envy for the ride. That Numb Bum 24 must be amazing to do.

I met a few Americans with a vague idea of Canada as a place where after getting married in the ice chapel you'd ride your dogsled home to the igloo...

Didn't actually complete the Numb Bum. That frostbite happened in the pre race trials! (my excuse was inexperience and badly fitting, borrowed gear).

Spent the rest of the winter there in Fairview - Peace country. Had weeks when the HIGH was in the -30's, amazing how people adapt and carry on with 'normal' life.

I can remember pulling my gloves off to open a truck door (they were plugged in AND left running), and my hand freezing straight onto it. I bet at -40 your nose would freeze to your phone too! Unless you were keeping it warm inside your clothing when fumbling around to get it out becomes the problem!
Voice recognition has to be the answer...

It's quick and easy to slide a scarf down to expose a nose for a few seconds. Most of the capacitive touch gloves aren't warm enough although I guess you could wear them under another pair.
Whether nose prints would ultimately turn out to be practical in the cold or not, I'm unsure, but it's an experiment I am keen to try. As long as the print is unique.

I would recommend installing an anti-virus app before trying this so you don't catch Ebola.

Why? Are you planning to register yours? This might be the ultimate security for these devices but I think the topic is getting too funny. We should nip it in the bud before it gets worse ;)
