Aye, the sad reality of owning a pedigree large/giant breed. I have never had an old dog before, this boy being my first dog and Berner. It's a new experience for me, time caught up with us all of a sudden... too soon... too hard. I'm relishing what glimmer of hope we have, at least until the biopsy results comes back. We'll cross that bridge when we get to it.

We have a Bernese as well and we realize that she is going to cost a small fortune when she gets older. We love her to bits so it will be money well spent.

I hope you have taken out insurance for her, that's what we advise anyone getting a Berner. I remember seeing your name on a new puppy owner list

My 11 year old Samoyed has a ear infection that has not responded in 2 years to treatment - is caused by a Pseudomonas superbug that is immune/resistant to everything for dogs and all but the last 2 human (and expensive) antibiotics. Very happy I moved and changed vet in 2014 to one who has been much more aggressive in treating it but I think I have now spent well over $5000. Surgery is out due to his age so he has a very strict regimen for drops 3 times a day ($110 per set of vials) and cultures every 4 weeks $200 at the lab plus regular full knock him out clean ear, etc $600-$800.

To look at he is perfectly happy and healthy. We are very slowly winning the battle but it could be most of this year before we get a full clear to stop treatment. Anyway I went to Westpac and actually increased the mortgage a bit so I would stop worrying about the vet bills. I was upfront why and they were more than happy to write it down as why wanted the increase and said it was not uncommon to have people in over pet bills.

When we moved here from the UK a few years ago we bought a beagle with us at a cost of around $5000 if I remember correctly.

She keeled over and died after she had been here 6 weeks, no obvious cause. Where pets are concerned the cost is immaterial as long as the quality of life is there.

Over the years we have had 5 dogs, all Dobermans, put down when they reached the end of the line. Very hard at the time but eventually you get to realise it was what the dog would have wanted.

Just a shame we don't have the option (unless you live in Holland or is it Switzerland).

Rather it a human or animal.. there is no price tag to life.

I would spend as much needed to help save the life of a pet as it is also a living thing. My pet is considered equal to a child in my home. I would spend just as much on my child if he was sick.

I would have spent more than the two grand I had already spent on Blackie if there had been a hope in hell of saving his life. But the vet convinced me that I had to finally let him go. He was suffering too much and it would have been selfish on my part to keep him going.

Still, it was the worst decision that I think I've ever had to make.

RIP my little man.

Tell me about it. When my Bootsie boy got sick I took him to Massey when the vet couldn't do any more. I guess I spent around $2,000 trying to save him. I'm a pensioner and that took all my savings but I would have gone into debt for him. I would have spent all I could beg, borrow and steal to give him the life he should have had. But he was desperately ill with no hope of recovery and I finally realised I was just hurting him by keeping him alive. After he was euthanised I was able to hold him in my arms on the long drive home and for the first time in weeks I could hold him without causing him pain. It felt like he was still alive, just sleeping in my arms. He even peed on me on the way home. It absolutely broke my heart. It has been well over two years and I now have five new furry children that I love very much, but I still choke up when I remember Boots, which is many times each day. He was the best friend I ever had.

Oriphix: Had my dogs teeth cleaned cost around $600 didn't even think about it.

In Feb I'll get my teeth and gums done for under $150. I must ask Denise the hygienist if I get a discount for not having bitten her yet.
