BigHammer: I think that's the intention. Like the millennium ten dollar notes. I think there were one and a half million printed.

I've never seen a Millenium $10 note (I think anyway), so they may now be worth a bit.

Coins last  a lot longer than notes, so I agree, these 50c coins are never going to worth a lot more than 50c.

They sure do. Some guy in the UK with a metal detector dug up over 5000 Saxon coins that had been in the ground for almost 1000 years just a couple of days ago near where I grew up!

I especially love how it costs less to ship to Australia than New Zealand.

Wouldn't you love to see the explanation for that?

Inter-Postal Agency Worm Hole?

At least here in NZ we'll still receive ours promptly... In Australia they'll be waiting months to Australia Post to find and deliver them! laughing

5 dollars to send work in nz for a tiny item is a bit steep, especially as they own the postal system. Not good that it i is more expensive than if they ship it overseas to oz. It reinforces the freight cost problems in nz.

Simple really.  NZ Post won't carry legal tender (the 50c coins are legal tender) except via couriers, but overseas they can just airmail it.  Apparently.

Yeah, I used registered airmail, but if I wanted a courier, it would cost $23.

Why won't they? Don't they trust their own staff not to steal it?

IMO it is due to gouging. Anything to make $5.00 over the $2.00 to post.

It's in contravention of their public contract.

The majority of couriers don't even seem to carry items like that (I've tried before). Fastway was the only one I tried that did.

SirHumphreyAppleby: For those eager to get your hands on one, according to http://www.rbnz.govt.nz/notes_and_coins/anzac-coin/Index.html (the link in the original post)...

"The coin will be available in New Zealand Post/Kiwibank stores from 23 March, 2015 and will be sold at ‘face value’ – 50 cents."

Totally sux for me... I live in Adelaide.

If I find one I'll grab it for you.
